Hole 5 Marshall at the Viking Classic
By mustang6560 on 7/13/11
The 140th Open Championship at Royal St. George's might be the giant gorilla of golf this weekend and deservedly so. It has the most tradition of any golf tournament and it attracts the best players from around the world to play.

However, I want to remind you that it's not the only golf tournament that is being played this weekend. In nearby (to oobgolf) Madison, Mississippi, the PGA Tour is in town to play the Viking Classic at Annandale Golf Club and yours truly will be volunteering for the first time at this year's tournament.

I will be a hole marshall on No. 5, which is the 522 yard par 5. PGATour.com describes the fifth hole as:
"Consistently the easiest hole on the course, this short, downhill par 5 yielded 13 eagles last year. A good drive leaves a middle- to long-iron second shot over water to a small green."
I am really excited about marshalling because I will be rewarded with an opportunity to play Annandale for free during the volunteer golf outing in September. Annandale is one of the nicest courses in the state of Mississippi, but unless you know a member you can't play. And on top of that, the green fee is north of $100 so I'm killing two birds with one stone (cha ching!).

In recent year's the Viking Classic has been played in late September/early October as part of the Fall Series, but the tournament was moved to the middle of the summer opposite the Open Championship. At first, you might think the new slot is worse but I personally think it's better. Yes, the best players in the world are in Sandwich, England, but unlike previous year's, the Golf Channel will be showing live coverage of all four days. Plus, the Open Championship will be finished for the day around the time coverage starts at Annandale. The only way to watch coverage last year was to watch the tape delay staring around 10PM at night.

The Viking Classic is a great tournament to attend to watch some of golf's up and coming stars. During last year's tournament, I followed the eventual winner Bill Haas for several holes and saw him bomb a 300+ yard drive into the wind. Where is he now? He's playing in the major across the pond. The field might not compare to Royal St. George's, but I'm excited to see Kenny Perry, Chris DiMarco, Tommy Gainey, Lee Janzen, D.A. Points, Johnson Wagner, Keegan Bradley, Steve Elkington and Billy Mayfair to name a few.

I'm not sure where I'll be on hole 5 just yet. Andrew recommended I try to get stationed on the green that way I'd actually get to see some of the action. Either way, make sure y'all tune into coverage after or in between the Open Championship to see me in action. I'll post a comment on this column Saturday and Sunday morning to let y'all know where I'm stationed.

Mustang- What are a hole marshall's responsibilities? Are you controlling the galleries?

mustang6560 says:
I'll find out exactly what I will be doing when I get there Saturday morning. But basically, I'll be making sure the gallery is quiet when a player hits.
