You Must Go To The World Am!
By Kickntrue on 4/18/13
I wondered how long it would take Kickntrue to write his first guest column since he said adios to us. The answer was 19 months. And of all of the golf topics, it is upcoming World Am that finally inspired the co-founder of oob to write us. Don't forget to enter the World Am Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip to the World Am. Enjoy!
Hey guys. Long time, no talk. It's Andrew/Kickntrue, Co-Founder of oob, and always an oober at heart. I follow the site and I hope you guys are really enjoying what Nathan and Tor are doing with it. It takes a lot of work keeping it going, and you guys have no clue what other tasks they are getting dragged into along the way. Awesome job, guys!
I wanted to take a moment to talk about the Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach at the end of August.
YOU. MUST. GO.
I wrote over 2000 individual articles on oob. I experienced a lot of cool golf things- not many of which I paid for. I had the chance to go the Nike Oven, and get fitted for a set of clubs. I went to the PGA Merchandise show and scored all kinds of contacts and swag. And ... I was privileged enough to experience the World Am multiple times.
My Friends - seriously, my friends (I can't believe how many of you I've met and still talk to today) - of all the golf experiences I was afforded, nothing came close to the World Am, and there is no single golf experience I'd be more willing to drop my hard earned money on. I think the reason why, is that word, "experience". A golf club is new, and shiny and perfect- and then you hit it. And you realize it's a golf club. Playing an amazing new course, a famous one even, is great- until you realize that 400 yards is 400 yards, and the hole is still 4.25 inches in diameter. Of course, that isn't to take away from either of these things- because they are great- and us golf nuts love them.
BUT- the World Am. 3000 golfers. 50+ Counties. 4 rounds of competitive golf, all played on amazing courses with new golfers, and new experiences, all within a shot of your own playing skill. Handicapped club events are nice- but they have nothing on this. When everyone is grouped so tight- every shot matters. Every stroke counts and you feel like equals. You don't make a par- and start comparing that to your playing partner's bogey, wondering who won the hole. For the 4 rounds your'e on the course- it's (basically) straight up.
Beyond that though- the people. The World Am is about the people. Most states will be represented (and those 50+ countries I mentioned), all sharing the same passion for the game you love. Many are business owners. Some are independently wealthy. And tons of them are just everyday Joes who discovered the event somewhere along the way, and decided it was the husband/wife or buddy trip they had to do every year.
So- full disclosure, I will not be attending this year. I actually had a couple buddies on the hook and my wife was even on the board for it being our first vacation without the kids (selling point- she spends all day on the beach). Sadly, I have a work conflict I just cannot escape (BUY MADDEN 25- Available for XBOX 360 and PS3 on August 27!!). But- I will be going back. There is no doubt about it.
And... if none of this has convinced you, I'll just use their own marketing, which is the absolute truth- 4 rounds of golf, 3000 golfers, 4 nights of all you can eat and drink... well, that last part should be enough. $500!!!!
This was written by Andrew Brown, a reader/follower/fellow oober/co-founder and the opinions are 100% his and do not reflect those of oobgolf in anyway. Enjoy! I'm sure he's ready for your feedback.

Any chance you can get Madden 25 out on PC?
Nice to hear from you again, Andrew.
I agree with Andrew the experience is the best. I'll be going again this year, already signed up!
Yep i'm already in.... let's not forget all the side action getting together with other oobers there. The mini golf for bragging rights, cigars should you so choose, and just plain being in the same town for once and hitting the bars !!! whew!
I'll get there... someday. Be a few more years before I can get the wife to go for it, since it's about the same time as my daughter's birthday. I'm hoping my daughter enjoys the game, so that we can make it an annual trip, once she is old enough to play.
Torleif Sorenson says:
I wish I could go, but since I have to stay home and "mind the store," I'm looking forward to seeing the pix and stories from this year's World Am.
To the rest of you: Please take Andrew's advice and go.
Duke of Hazards says:
i'd like to go one of these days. looks like fun. i'd have to get an official handicap. it'd be an easier decision if I wasn't at the opposite end of the country. best case scenario is swinging some kind of exchange with Mrs. Duke of Hazards. hmm.
Doesn't the World Am accept an oobgolf handicap?
sroger13: Yes. It's a special honor they bestow on us :)
Matt F says:
I'm hopefully going next year.
Tim Horan says:
Too far to come from little ol' UK
I am signed up already!!!
Mustang are you going back this year?
