Cargos And Playing Through
By Kickntrue on 6/3/08
TheGolfGirl seems to have some great stuff kicking lately. Check out her last two posts; one on cargo shorts at the golf course and then a really interesting one on speed of play and gender based on an experience she had over the weekend on the course. (TheGolfGirl)

Idk about the whole cargo shorts thing. I mean I admit thats usually what I wear most of the time, but then again thats because I can't find a pair of traditional golf shorts that are long enough for my 'tall/thin' figure. Plus I'm usually playing at regular old middle of the price range courses where typically nothing is too looked down upon as long as you have a nice shirt on.

I store tees, score card, ball marker coin, divot repair tool, and a golf glove in my pockets. with those extra 2 pockets I can organize myself so I can mark my ball on the green quickly and let my mates putt out. Fashion wise I'd rather not, but functionally they are a plus.

I think general rules: If you are 18 and under anything goes from a shorts standpoint. 18 and over dress pants and or non-cargo shorts are the way to go, plus a collared shirt whether the course requires it or not.
My question is to chipotle... how many tees are you carrying? how big is the scorecard your playing with? Do you have some kind of enormous divot replacement tool (ie... a shovel)? That you can't fit 4 tees, a golf ball, scorecard, quarter.. nickel.. dime and a divot repair tool in two pants pockets? Its just not that much stuff.

The differences between any given pair of cargo shorts can be pretty wide. A lot of the pictures on the site had people looking like slobs cargo shorts aside.

I tend to base it on where I'm playing, local Muni I'll tend to wear cargos. Anyone's private club or otherwise "fancy" course and I'll go back to regular shorts.... I HATE playing in pants.

Josh- couldn't agree with you more. I've been telling my wife since I met her that I don't like to wear pants. It's fine at home- but sometimes showing up at church in your boxers gets awkward.

As a golf style enthusiast I am surprised TheGolfGirl jumped on the "no cargo shorts" bandwagon. I see cargo shorts as the style of the day. As a 30 year old guy, I am not comfortable wearing flat front/traditional shorts that stop several inches above my knee on or off the golf course. It may have been fine 10 years ago when all shorts were this style and length, but times have changed. I'd be interested in hearing golfgirl's reaction if a course enforced a rule requiring all ladies to wear knee length (or longer) denim skirts instead of the slim athletic outfits that are so stylish now...just because it was considered "proper attire".

Maybe it's because alot of golf courses are run by older gentlemen who aren't into the current male style of cargo shorts, so they require the shorty shorts that they are comfortable in. And on the flip side, they enjoy seeing ladies in the shorter skirts, so they wouldn't think of putting requirements on them.

Short shorts on men should be illegal, especially on the golf course. The only balls that should be seen on the golf course are those made for the game if you get my drift.
