Who Needs Tiger?
By Kickntrue on 6/29/08
If you bothered to turn on golf this weekend you caught a couple good stories. Inbee Park won the Women's US Open at age 19- the youngest ever. On the men's side, "old man" Kenny Perry went into the clubhouse with a lead and won when Bubba Watson missed a putt on 18 to force a playoff.
Other drama of the weekend included Annika Sorenstam, who was playing in her last US Open, holing out for eagle on #18 Sunday from 199 yards. The crowd went crazy- so crazy in fact that I had to actually stop what I was doing in another room to go find out what all the cheering on the tv was all about. What a great moment for her and women's golf. Truly (please hold the "wuss-calls" but my eyes welled up.
Back to the men's side for a moment- you can really see the difference to the players with Tiger out in their mindsets. While Kenny Perry said that it's a shame that Tiger is out (and I believe him that he harbors no ill-will), he mentioned how everything including the FedEx Cup becomes so much more interesting. Perry is now only a couple of points behind Mickelson for the lead. While $10M to Tiger Woods is a drop in the bucket- how much do you think it means for someone like Perry who could earn 1/3 of his entire CAREER earnings with a FexEx Cup victory. Also- how crazy is it that Kenny Perry is 9th on the All-Time money list? Talk about playing in the right era. I don't think many people would put Kenny Perry on any list of the the best golfers ever.

It was nice to watch golf this weekend without Tiger's swing being anaylized, Tiger's clothing choices discussed, every shot of Tiger's shown, etc., etc. Wow, golf lives without Tiger, TV golf was exciting without Tiger. The women's open was exciting, the youngest player ever to win, and a young women from the University of Arkansas (whoo-pig-sooie) in her first LPGA tournament challenging the leaders and ending up tied for third (Stacy Lewis)
