Is This Ryder Cup Ad Offensive?
By Kickntrue on 8/22/08
I've seen this Portuguese ad for the Ryder Cup on a couple sites now. I can't seem to get worked up about it. Maybe I'm not being sensitive to a situation that some find more sacred (I am too young to really know anything of Iwo Jima other than movies), but it just doesn't offend me. Any differing opinions?

I've been in the Army for 21 years. I am not offended by it. I think people are too easily offended. However, WW II vets may feel differently.
i don't find it offensive, just poorly done. You could have at least had golfers doing it instead of the marines. makes no sense.
i'm sure there's people who find it offensive, but i think you have to realize it wasn't meant to downplay the war or what this photo (now statue) signifies. Maybe in poor taste --- kinda like the spanish (soccer?) team that did the "squinty eye" photos in the olympics. (it WAS the spanish team right? i dunno, but you know what i'm referring to)
I agree very poorly done. Granted I could easily get offended by it, but rather I just choose to think that the creators were just that ignorant in the first place to even risk publishing such an ad.
i think it is offensive. if it was done with golfers it would merely be in bad taste. None of the men that actually placed that flag survived this battle. golf is not war, it is not life or death.
Certain things just shouldn't be messed with. This scene is one of those things. That is a sacred moment in the history of this country and the world for that matter and it should never be taken lightly.
In my opinion, this add takes lightly the thousands of men and women who sacrificed so much for all of us. I bet if the author of this add had a family member who was killed in that battle that they never would have posted it. It's unfortunate that so many of us don't appreciate what our brothers and sisters in the military have done for us. If we did, we would never mock it and we would always be offended by things such as this.
MAKES NO SENSE! AND IS VERY OFFENSIVE TO ME, A VET WHO KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT THE IMAGE STANDS FOR. IF THE PORTUGUESE MADE THIS UP, WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING? VERY POOR TASTE!
