Masters TV Schedule Sucks
By Kickntrue on 4/8/09
Can someone explain why ESPN doesn't begin coverage of the Masters until 4pm tomorrow and Friday?

What really pisses me off is I know the answer- Money. Someone has the rights to show S and C and company R can't show part E or W until company E shows shot D. So what does the fan get? Maybe two and a half hours of live coverage of the first two rounds of the greatest golf event in the world.

It's not like it costs more to produce- because they're out there taping the whole thing to show us highlights and early coverage- so why not run a live feed somewhere? Oh yah, cause we're getting screwed.

What kind of terrible deal did ESPN negotiate? Even Golf Channel live coverage usually starts at 2pm and that's for a run of the mill tournament.

Guess we'll all be fighting for bandwidth to watch what little we can online. Lame.

Talk about tough TV choices- Today- do you choose the Par 3 Contest at 3pm on ESPN or the Champions League match between Liverpool vs Chelsea at 2:30 on ESPN2?

you easily choose champions league over the par 3... or better yet you watch the par 3 then watch the better match of Barcelona vs Bayern on ESPN classic on the replay. You can watch Liverpool vs Chelsea during the EPL season.

You're telling me I have to watch this on ESPN? Is Stuart Scott going to be a commentator? At least I have a mute button.

How could you not like ESPN?! I mean.. everytime someone gets close to the pin you get a "Booya" and if someone makes a hole-in-one, you can expect a "Boom Goes The Dynamite!"

Actually the coverage is dictated by the Masters, not ESPN or other TV networks. For years the Masters would only allow TV coverage of the back 9 holes and just recently started allowing coverage of the Par 3 event. If it was up to the networks they would probably show every single shot on every single day, including practice rounds.

Yes, this goes back to the days when it was blacked out in Georgia to boost ticket sales. This is kind of a "left-over" from that. I think they also have a false sense of keeping the mystique of the Masters up. Seems silly in this day and age.

Why have they disabled ShotTracker? I can't even follow the action on my PC while I'm at work.

This is the one sporting event where it's NOT about the money. The powers that be at the Master have always been selective on how they allow the coverage, that's why it changes every year. I remember one year I think they had no commercials, or very few, which was nice. If it was about the money, we would see coverage from the ceremonial first drive to the last putt. As much as I wish we could see more, I applaud the Master for not selling out(yet).

I am a golf fan as such I would like to see the best golfers on one of the greatest venues play dusk till dawn. I don't know why the Masters has a problem with the exposure. The club may be private but the sport is public. If you are going to be one of the four majors you almost owe it to your public to have complete access. To all those who applaud the Masters refusal to sell out I say get real. You can have complete exposure and keep to your principals. What ever reason the masters have to restrict the viewing time I say its time to move on and say this fully with everyone. Greg

I am so disgusted with the coverage this year. AS a huge golf fan, like most of us here, I want to see the best in the word play from the last place guys teeing off first thing in the morning to the leaders hitting their last putt on 18. The coverage of the Masters this year is no different than any other gold tournament. How can that possibly be? The supposed "most prestigious golf tournament" in all of golf and it's shown on TV like any other regular PGA event. I don't get it!

An example of the 1 percenters exerting their clout ? Such a shame. Hopefully the PGA will take some steps to get this tournament covered as it should be. Have Hootie taken out back and beat the crap out of that old fart.

The men in blazers are greedy hypocrits. They've sold their souls and the golfing public down the river for 30 pieces of silver from Sky Sports and other pay per view channels. They claim to be promoters of the game. It would be nice if the vast majority of golfing fans could see the golf! That would promote the game.

Just for the record: one can watch live golf from The Masters online with Sky Sports - it's $9-99 for a day pass. You're telling me that Augusta National haven't received a huge chunk of change from Sky?

robertwilliams93 says:
It's on Masters.com free online now. I'm watching it. The Sky deal must be for all Sky Sports for the day. Watch it free now online. Not the point though. It should be on ESPN TV live now! The TV coverage is unacceptably bad.
