Did Rory get snubbed?
Did Tiger Snub Rory?
By Kickntrue on 4/9/09
Rory McIlroy wanted to play a practice round with Tiger. Tiger didn't think that sounded like much fun.
The World No 1 has told 19-year-old McIlroy, already the World No 17 in little over a year as a professional, that he wants to avoid the media frenzy surrounding McIlroy's Masters debut and for that reason would prefer not to practice with the hugely talented young Ulsterman.
I see Tiger's point, but I hope they play a round together soon. I hope Rory takes this as a bit of a snub and uses it as fuel to chase down Tiger.

It's not a snub, I'm sure Tiger takes the Masters pretty serious and the press would turn this into a Circus. That's the last thing he wants, I'm sure he's getting more then enough attention already. If Rory wants to play with Tiger bad enough he'll find a way to be in the last group on Sunday.

I think its weird that Rory would even want to do a practice round with Tiger. Rory needs to be focused on his own game, not getting celeb signatures.

Really? A threesome on Sunday? How's that work?

I think Tiger also wants to keep a mental edge on Rory by the off chance they do play together in any round.

Tiger Woods is a JERK and I can't believe you people are buying ANY of this. Using the MEDIA FRENZY as an excuse is a crock of nonsense. Who in the media cares about ANY golfer but TIGER WOODS?
There are so many stories to follow this weekend. Gary Player, Greg Norman, McIlroy, Tiger, Sergio, just to name a few. I personally am pulling for the OLD guys.

kidputter says:
I probably wouldn't have been so harsh regarding Tiger had he cited different reasoning for not wanting to play with the kid. But for him to use the media as his excuse is just ludicrous. Anyone DISAGREE?

mmontanaro says:
I'm sure these guys discuss, plan, cancel, change practice rounds all the time- the media just happened to make this one a story. Don't get sucked into the media frenzy- they're ignorant and almost all of them would rather be golfers than golf writers.

ToddRobb says:
This falls under "If you gotta ask". Did the kid think that Tigers schedule isn't planned before he gets there? Or did he think since he's the flavor of the day, Tiger would drop what ever plans he had to play with him. Either way, his people need to get a clue, when Tiger shows up to a major it's all business. What would be the benefit to Tiger playing with some "next big thing" 19 year old in a practice round for the Masters?
4/9/09

kidputter says:
If that were the case, make up a better excuse than the media. Tiger has enough PR people to be able to come up with much more plausible reasons. I would have cited that my schedule had already been set and I wouldn't feel right altering it last minute. Or Tiger could have been a MAN and said "I don't want to play with you. I'm trying to beat you and everyone else out there and I'm not going to take a chance of giving you a psychological lift if you score as well or better than me."
4/9/09

ToddRobb says:
Kidave, Tiger doesn't have to give a reason for anything he does at a golf tournament to another golfer, it was stupid on the kids part to even ask. As far as the excuse goes, I believe him, it would be added attention on top of what he already gets, and given a choice, why bother. Sounds like you don't like that Tiger actually said what the truth was. It goes without saying that he's trying to beat him and everyone else out there, some bullshit practice round win or lose isn't going to change that. Why go to the circus if you don't have to?
4/9/09

ToddRobb says:
One more point, I really don't think Tiger's worried about giving the kid a "psychological lift", he would need a hell of lot more than winning a practice round to even get a whiff of being on Tigers level psychologically.

KICK- haha i know what your saying did you buy a driver from taylormade? so if he wins youll get your money back? haha thats a pretty big gamble!..... I want sergio to be up there with tiger and all them but if he was i think he would melt from playing with tiger and the crowds but thats just me!!!! i would love to see rory win this because hes such a young kid it would be a huge Accomplishment for a kid so young haha so im going for tiger and rory!!!!!!!!!

kidputter says:
Tiger owes it to Rory, you and EVERY OTHER FAN who respects him to be honest. The media has no bearing on whether he played a practice round with Rory or with ME. Marketing is marketing. This puts Tiger in an elitist category and, as seen with Boo and Daly, the fans would rather root for the EVERYMAN. I'm thinking Tiger just doesn't want to share the spotlight. I see him as selfish, childish and elitist. 3 qualities I choose not to condone or want my kid to emulate. That is where my agenda lies with him.
Golfwise, he's great. I'll leave it at that.
4/9/09

ToddRobb says:
Kidave, I see, you figure Tiger telling Rory that he didn't want to be a part of the media circus was a lie, and that there was some other reason that he didn't want to play with him, and whatever that reason was he should have been man enough to say what the real reason was. Okay. We agree to disagree.

Tiger has been an elitist for quite some time now if you hadn't notice, why do you think he doesn't tip? I honestly think he couldn't care less about the spotlight, my opinion is he see's it as a necessary evil, I think he would much rather just play golf and or practice. Selfish, hell yes, childish, that's a bit much. Just because he didn't want to share his space and time with someone that had no business asking for it, doesn't make him childish. Let's face it, at this point he doesn't need the marketing that you spoke of, so again I have to ask, why bother?

Kolt15 says:
haha yeah toddrobb you got a really good point about marketing.......... i dont think tiger even wants the spotlight who really cares its just the media?

kidputter says:
Tiger wants nothing BUT the spotlight. He loves the glory, the accolades, the spotlight. Most of you have said he even THRIVES on the spotlight and the pressure that comes with it. If Tiger is not careful, his off course persona may hinder his popularity. No one wants to root for a guy with a crappy attitude.......... unless you're a YANKEE fan.
4/9/09

ToddRobb says:
I think Tiger enjoys the thrill of competing and it wouldn't matter if there was a spotlight or not. He "Thrives" on the heat of the battle, guys like him want to compete and win at all cost. It's a very unique personality flaw, that's what got Michael Jordan in gambling trouble on the golf course, thinking he could play with guys that were much better than him without taking strokes. They are just wired differently than most people, that's what makes them special.

Jake Bogardus says:
Alright first of all Tiger didn't even get in till 4 on Monday and only played like 4 holes. Then didn't even go out on Tuesday saying that the conditions wouldn't tell them anything about how the course would play later in the week. I'm pretty sure Rory didn't want to play only 4 holes quick on Monday with Tiger as its getting dark, so this isn't a snub at all and anyone who is saying his reason isn't valid is being ridiculous.
4/9/09

kidputter says:
Jake, what you just wrote makes good sense. Why didn't Tiger say it, instead of saying the media circus around Rory was the reason he refused to play?
When is the ceremony for Tiger winning the tourney scheduled? He shot a 70 today and as they pointed out (OVER AND OVER) each time he has shot opening round 70 he has won.
4/9/09

Kolt15 says:
kid- haha well then hes on a good track to win then i guess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4/9/09

ToddRobb says:
I think the ceremony is scheduled for Sunday around 6:30PM

ToddRobb says:
In a nut shell, it's damn hard work being the best golfer in the world. You don't do things at the spur of the moment for a major championship. Tigers time is extremely valuable, playing a practice round with Rory would have been more time because of the fans and the media. He told Rory the truth, I don't think Rory's losing sleep over it. The media made it a story by telling us about it, and here we are. Maybe Rory should hook up with Jessica Simpson, she had the nerve to ask Tiger for lessons, not just one LESSON, she wanted Tiger Woods to teach her how to play golf. Yea, like that's gonna happen....

I thoroughly enjoyed the to and fro btw todd and kid. I agree with TODD. If he played a round today with Rory, whats next?? A round with "Joe Schmoe" at the US Open? and why? Just coz he asked? Come on, give Tiger a break. He gave a polite and true reason to not play the kid. I think Rory should be happy playing with AK for now. They can learn a lot from each other. KIDAVE, you've gotta be a NY METS fan. I can understand why its frustrating for you. Tell me if I'm right!
