Confused Heckler Booted By Phil
By Kickntrue on 5/11/09
Geoff Shackleford caught this gem of a story over the weekend at The Players where someone yelled "FIGJAM" at Phil, and was rightfully booted. The heckler later said he had no clue what it meant and thought it was just a nickname for Phil.

Through Geoff, from a Golfweek blog:
Mickelson hit what appeared to be a splendid escape shot, though it came up just short of the green. As he headed out from beneath the tree, a man clearly yelled out, GÇ£Way to go, Figjam.GÇ¥

Mickelson stopped, turned, and confronted the man.

GÇ£What did you say?GÇ¥ Mickelson said, and the man repeated it.

Figjam is an acronym that stands for GÇ£F*** IGÇÖm good, just ask me.GÇ¥ Mickelson certainly knows what it means and asked for Mackay to help marshals identify the man. They did, and while Mickelson and Mackay headed to the next shot, the man was removed from the area by the marshals.
Shackelford says it best, "I remember the good old days when they knew what they were saying. And they were original." That guy must feel like a complete tool bag; or he's just an idiot- either way...

As a side note about yelling. My wife always complains when we watch golf and she has to hear idiots continually yelling "Get In The Hole!" after each shot. I had to agree, but countered that I'd love to hear someone yell "oobgolf dot com!" Can someone make that happen?

My number 2 hope in Golf (right behind my hope to play better) is that all tournaments will ban yelling things like Get in the hole.

Of course, you've noticed that SI has launched a social golf site, too. I saw it featured in this month's Golf Magazine, which is owned by SI. Screw 'em.

I dont think the heckler was confused. FIGJAM is a nickname that several of the other golfers have somewhat given him due to the fact that many of the golfers out there cant stand him. Google it.

Eric is right, just read an article about it. This was posted by a fan in 2007 ; "As he was walking off the 18th green at the FryGÇÖs Electronics open yesterday, in Scottsdale, AZ, he didnGÇÖt look too happy with his game. When he passed the grandstands (and me), I said, GÇ£too bad, FIGJAMGÇ¥. Within 1 minute, 2 police officers stepped up to me and said GÇ£Mr. Mickelson wants you off the courseGÇ¥. Make your own conclusions, folks. As for me, IGÇÖm thinking thereGÇÖs something to be said for the nickname he seems to have earned."

Also my brother played in Phil's group in an AJGA tourney when Phil was 16 years old. He told me he was the most arrogant person he ever played with.

PHIL'S PERCEPTION IS A GRACIOUS FAMILY MAN. BUT I DO AGREE. AND HAVE HEARD, BEHIND THE SCENES HE'S A DICK. IT'S ALL AN ACT ON CAMERA, I THINK. TIGER TOO. WOULD YOU BE HUMBLE IF YOU WERE THE BEST IN THE WORLD? EVER?

Karvoload, "you heard". jbird "your brother told you 20 years ago". What do you gain out of slamming a person that you know nothing about? I have attended several tournaments and walked along to observe his game and interaction with the fans and he was always pleasant. I had the pleasure of conversation with him and his wife at a hotel in Dallas and they were very nice and talkative. Granted these are only a small sampling but it's better than saying you don't like him because somebody else told you they don't like him. Karvoload get someone to show you how to release the capslock.

Why don't we make golf a team sport where spectators follow and heckle anyone they don't like in order to influence the outcome! How ridiculous does that sound? You guys all need a lesson in decorum and need to show respect for the game. As a spectator at the events you should at least be able to keep your mouth in check, or better still walk on and find the guy you're routing for. If you want this game to go down the route to "Happy Gilmore" good luck! but you won't find the majority of real fans will follow you there.

What annoys me the most is all those idiots that yell, "Get in the hole!" "Yeah Tiger!" etc... they always seem to be standing RIGHT next to the microphones...

mmontanaro says:
The problem is that none of the people that do the yelling are reading any golf web sites. Most of them are hackers who were out for a walk with their friends and stumbled into a golf tournament. They'll never know that it is frowned upon by true golfers.

I just wish the players would start trash talking each other, like it is when I play, there is always velcro, club clanking, sneezing, coughing, laughing, and then there's the long silent spells that are really annoying, cause you just know something is about to happen, or a "YOU THE MAN!!!" as you're starting your down swing, and then a "That's not how Tiger would play it" after it shanks 20 yards and alot more laughing when you choke over that 3 footer. A little good natured trash talk would help Phil loosen up a bit, this game is suppose to be fun. As for the "FIGJAM" comment, I could see it either way, Heckling could certainly be taken too far, but at the same time Phil needs to loosen up and play the game, I think it makes it worse to call attention to each and every incident.

lol. hate the yelling too. Maybe Oobgolf should hire a streaker with Oobgolf.com painted on his/her back (like the casino ones). Now that would be funny. Maybe one of you can volunteer?

Wait until they get to Bethpage in a few weeks. The New York crowd can be very testy. If the pros were smart they should take a page out of Nick Faldo's book and go out right now and buy an I Love NY hat. Good luck

I'm kinda in the middle with this one. On one hand, I like the tradition of the game being "old School", on the other hand, if the game is going to continue to grow it's going to have to change with the times. You can't have it both ways, the new people coming in to the game don't give a shit about the tradition of the game, hence the hoopin and hollerin. Even though, they have been yelling "you da man!" for about 20 years now, maybe it's a part of the new tradition. (I sure hope not)

falcon50driver says:
The only time I feel it's appropriate to yell "get in the hole" is when your buddy has the serious brain fart and hits a 10 foot putt that stops 8 feet short. Shake your head and say "man ! how did that not go in ?"

I think it is interesting that Phil reacts that strongly to "figjam;" must hit a nerve. FIGJAM originally came out of Aussie Cricket. I don't think it is a US fan that started using it. People who know Phil better than I hung it on him and it stuck. I thought Phil was a jerk to Faldo at the Masters. That is the great enigma of Phil: he can be really nice, but he is also a FIGJAM.

Have waited on both Phil and Tiger for dinner, neither tips well although Phil was a little better. I lose instant respect for the athletes that make that kind of money and don't understand that tipping is part of the gig if you eat out or use service professionals.

GÇ£Mr. Mickelson wants you off the course.GÇ¥ Well, an appropriate reply might be, "Please tell Mr. Mikelson that Mr. Thompson wants HIM off the Tour -- but that's not likely to happen, either. I'm asserting my First Amendment right to free speech, and I want my attorney present." See how quickly the rabbit ears BS ceases.

And what would happen if the crowd singsonged "Fiiigg-jaaammmm" at the US Open as he walked off the tee, as the crowd at the Mets games did to Darryl Strawberry? Would the entire crowd be ejected? There is no obvious profanity being spoken. Phil, shut up, play golf, and stop whining that somebody called you a name! That stuff is something that childeren do.
