David Feherty Is Sorry
By Kickntrue on 5/12/09
I've avoided this whole David Feherty thing on purpose, but 1) it is news, and 2) it's now over. Here is what he wrote,
"If you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."
Clearly you can see how that ruffled a couple feathers. Here is my thought- and I really don't want to turn oobgolf into some kind of right wing left wing flame war in the comments, so I'll be a careful as I can.

I think Feherty is in a lot of ways a comedian and he was writing to specific audience that he was playing-up to. The second thing, and this is where I'm being careful, he probably meant it, and is probably right (at least in his own mind). I know some soldiers, not many, but some. Feherty has always been a huge "troops guy" and has visited and put himself inside the situation more than 99.9% of us, or the people who are outraged. Anyone is entitled to an opinion, it's just that Feherty is in a more public sphere that most, a sphere that requires neutrality. If some shock jock said this, it wouldn't even be news.

The problem with stuff like this is that it wasn't a "comment." It was an article he wrote for a column in a Dallas magazine. Articles are proofread by many people, including the author, several times before being published. So the problem is that stupidity reigns and no one says, "hey, maybe this is in incredible bad taste, regardless of political affiliation." If he was being interviewed on-camera and made an off color comment, that would be different. But this was intent. And like I said, affiliation aside, they had to know it would cause a storm. So that's either stupidity or intent- you pick.

The guy's funny, he made an off color comment, who hasn't? Deal with it. When did this country become so lame? This should never have made 'news.'

Agreed - in fact, Feherty only said what MOST of us wanted to say!!!

If he had said the same thing, only the punchline were "the other two BEGGED for the bullets", he wouldn't have gotten so much grief. Either way, it's FUNNY. Meant to be funny and that's it.

I think it's called free speech.

i don't believe it is in fact news. this is a guy who constantly makes d@#k and fart jokes in his monthly Golf Magazine articles. what exactly were they expecting to get?
sperry says:
i disagree with the fire he is taking. people who make those comments involving Bush are laughed at. Just like people who support same sex marriage are cheered. As soon as the table is turned a people make the comment about a lefty or stand up for defining marriage how they were brought up, all of the sudden those people are targeted as bullies and insensitive. this whole P.C. environment is BS. People need to suck it up and grow a spine.
