LPGA Needs Wie To Step Up
By Kickntrue on 5/14/09
Michelle Wie has taken what seems like a long time to get to where she is now, and while she was often criticized for not "earning" her way on Tour, now that she has, the LPGA really needs her to step up. In a sport that struggles with tv viewers, or really even getting tv time, along with gaining new sponsorships, it really needs Wie to play great. The talent is clearly there, and Wie is still quite young, but she's not as young as she used to be. In a Tour where teenagers can and have won, Wie needs to start putting it together.
Now that she has "earned" her way- I know I'm rooting for her, and her playing well certainly makes me more willing to turn on an LPGA event.
Proof of her talent and struggles; So far in her first round of the Sybase Classic, Wie has 5 birdies ... to ago along with 5 bogeys. She has plenty of weekend left, but a strong finish by the LPGA elite would be welcome I'm sure. Lorena Ochoa has won this event the past 3 years.

I"ll tell you what. I want to see Wie become the player we all know she can be, but seriously she has to stop this nonsense talking about the PGA tour events. "i want to win a pga tour event" or "i can compete in that event". Love, let's win a few tournaments on the LPGA tour and then we can start talking about competing on the same tour with tiger woods. Crawl before you do backflips, hun.
I like that you not only called her "love," but also "hun" all in the same paragraph... classic! I totally agree with you though.
I think she is too self involved and will never step up because it won't benefit her directly. This is a result or her upbringing and the pressure she feels from her parents to play the PGA tour events. I am sure if she had different guidance throughout her life she would step up. Golf is an individual sport but all of of these ladies are part of something bigger, the LPGA, and she doesn't see that. If she does step up I will eat my words but I just don't see it happening.
I don't know what the problem is, but I just don't have the desire to see the LPGA. They are playing the Sybase Classic about 10 minutes from my house, I could go for free any of the days, and still have no plans to do so. Not a big Michelle Wie fan that's for sure, but that's not the only problem. For whatever reason I'd rather not.
Michelle Wie is Stanford. I am Cal. With that being said, I am sure I have already stated my opinion on this matter.
On a serious note, I think Wie has one of the best swings on the LPGA tour. However, a good golfer also needs to be smart on the course. I agree that probably her parents have given her almost too much guidance. The girl needs to know how to manage the game successfully on her own.
I just hope she wears those Calvin Krylons again.
