Youngest US Amateur Champ Ever
By Kickntrue on 8/31/09
17 year old Byeong-Hun An won the 109th US Amateur yesterday becoming the youngest winner in the event's history.
GÇ£Age doesnGÇÖt matter,GÇ¥ An said Saturday after beating the Fresno State sophomore Bhavik Patel, 3 and 2, in the semifinals in Tulsa, Okla. GÇ£If you look at the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods is around his 30s. Rory McIlroy is like 20 or 21. Kenny Perry is around his 40s, I think. I donGÇÖt think it matters.GÇ¥Byeong-Hun An's win broke the record set by Danny Lee last year when he won at the age of 18 years and 1 month. Lee had beat Tiger Woods record.
I'm not going to overhype this too much. I'd love to look at this as the next great thing in golf- but we've seen that story line before- and it just doesn't usually pan out. The fact is- An was the best golfer in the USA this past week... who doesn't get paid to do it. That matters, no doubt, but let's wait to see what else he can do. Still, let's not take even a bit away from his week and what he did.
Byeong-Hun An has a great sporting lineage though, so this isn't to be too unexpected. Both his parents were Olympic medalists in table tennis. Rock On.
