Playoffs? You Kidding Me?
By Kickntrue on 9/10/09
The third event of the FedExCup Playoffs is underway in Chicagoland. Go Stricker! Steve is actually playing with Tiger for the first two rounds- so ... that's kind of fun.

And... because why wouldn't you watch this? Who cares if it's another sport?

so i dont understand fully i guess. they reset the points after this tournament this week, then if any of the top five win the last event in the playoffs they automaticlly win the fedex cup. So what if someone outside the top five wins? do theey go off points for that tourney only? i dont get why they would reset points? or is it they only reset the points for the top five?

@jessehunt- we're not supposed to understand it. we just watch with anticipation.. and then after the Tour Championship- they will tell us how Tiger won.

From PGATour.com:

The reset ensures a real shootout at THE TOUR Championship as all 30 players in the field will have a mathematical chance of winning the FedExCup with a victory at East Lake Golf Club. A win by any of the top five seeds will guarantee the FedExCup title outright while seeds 6-10 will have an excellent chance of capturing the title with a victory.

The "Reset" chart shows the points that the 30 participants in the TOUR championship will have.

THANKS that actually makes sense i guess. still think it needs some tweaking maybe.

@jessehunt- I think it makes sense if you really are trying to crown the best golfer on the last weekend of the year with some special title. if you are trying to give the best golfer a chance to be recognized as that... you really shouldn't reset the points on them twice. (once at start of fedexcup- and then again before final). I realize the last event could lack drama in some cases- but how can you argue that anyone but Tiger or Steve Stricker (and only if he win again) deserve to be the FedExCup Champion?

I love that "playoffs?" clip. I like the new playoff system; I think the winner of the playoffs should come from the last tournament. This is what we've come to expect from all other sports haven't we?

Banker85 says:
@greendevil - ya i guess we do but it doesnt even come close to the drama you get in baseball, football, basketball (not including first round) golf should just be about the majors. dont get me wrong i mean i love love love watching golf actually more than other sports but i think they are trying to hard.

Tour Championship should be match play. That's a real playoff.

they should only reset at the beginning of the playoffs. then let the guys fight it out. reduce the players like they do now so the heat is on. let the finishes in each tourney earn points as follows:
#1 - 2500
#2 - 3250
#3 - 4000
#4 - 4500
At the end of the 4th and final tourney, crown the most points won.
If you dont play an event you get 0 points. this way even if any single golfer wins #1 and #2, he is still not guaranteed the fedex cup, yet his consistency is being rewarded because his points are not reset at the final event.

Banker85 says:
@ayparekh - i like that idea, that would be more like actual playoffs where reg. season determines if you get in or not then from there you have to perforom to keep advancing and win.

ayparekh says:
yup. there is no pressure on steve stricker to do anything in this event. he can just mosie along....where's the fun in that?

Mora's rant is only second to Iverson's rant about practice - we're talking about practice, man - practice!!!

scenario: Tiger has an off week and finishes 10th at East Lake. Let's say Stricker finishes 6th or worse, Furyk finishes 4th or worse, Slocum, Johnson both finish 3rd or worse. Then here comes somebody like Marc Leishman (who hasn't won a tournament all year) with an unusually great week and pulls off a win at the Tour Championship. That's right, your new season long champion would be.... Marc Leishman? Really? Would this be fair? "Sorry Tiger, your too good, so we're essentially going to take points away from you to bring you back down to a reachable level for the final event." I know they're going for excitement, but it's at the expense of integrity. All of this is probably moot though as Tiger will surely finish better than 10th? right?
