Tiger Won't Reach 19 Majors
By Kickntrue on 10/6/09
SI's Selena Roberts doesn't think Tiger will reach 19 majors. Hope she never wanted an interview with the man.
This year proved that Tiger could dominate a season without doing Jack. He can bully his way through the whistle-stops on the PGA Tour and not gain ground on Nicklaus's record of 18 majors. And though Tiger has rationalized his '09 performanceGÇörepeatedly saying how proud he is of his consistencyGÇöbeing stalled at 14 majors must blow his beautiful mind.
Honestly, I think the whole article probably started when she thought she had this really clever idea of saying, "Tiger's season didn't mean Jack" and then she decided to build the whole thing around that. I'll give her this- at the very least, she at least makes reasonable arguments, versus just saying, "Tiger won't do it," but I can't think it's going to win her any fans in Camp Tiger, especially since it was pasted on the back page of this week's Sports Illustrated, probably the single most-read sports magazine page in the world each week. One of the more interesting points she makes is about Tiger's stubborness in leaving Butch Harmon and how throwing 10 straight majors without a victory away in the prime of his career may be his undoing.

The real wild thing is that if Tiger wasn't Tiger (which I guess would make this conversation irrelavant in the first place), this whole thing would be the most logical thing in the world. Name any other player you'd even consider betting on to win 5 majors in the next 10 years. That would be as many as Byron Nelson, Peter Thomson and Seve Ballesteros each won, but they had their whole careers to do it. Still- how many people really don't think he'll find a way to pull it off?

She is the same one that wrote the book about Alex Rodriguez - not very credible, im my opinion. Tiger will break Jack's record - no doubt!!!

Ahhh... the will he/won't he prophecy. If he continues to play like Tiger, then yes, he will most likely break Jack's record. But we're talking about the future, and making predictions. He could wake up tomorrow, and decide to pull a "Barry Sanders/Jim Brown" and retire. The "next Tiger" could appear out of no where and do to Tiger what Tiger has been doing to the rest of the golf world for so long. She raises some good points, but she is looking at this last season in a pigeon hole, and comparing it to the rest of his career. It's not a valid comparison.

BAMMMMMM... reality check. The difficulty of winning Major Championship tournaments vs other tournaments is directly proportional to the amount of CRAP that the media can write about it. And the same goes for every other tournament on the tour. Tiger is just as likely to win a major next year as he is to win any other tournament. And by the way... that goes for every other golfer on the tour as well.

Who cares - whether he breaks Jack's record or not, he's going to go down as the most influential player ever, the dominant golfer of the modern era, and the man who knocked Jordan off the world sports icon mantle. Besides, and rational golfer would never pretend that Tiger breaking Jack's record makes him better than Jack, or missing it means he's not as good. Too difficult to compare guys from different generations.

Tiger is the man, and until someone else goes Paddy Harrington with him in the fields, it won't change the pecking order.

I agree jrossbeck. He will go down in history. It makes me sick that a player will win one major and do nothing after, yet Tiger will win a bunch of tourney and still get heat from the haters. Damn if he does and damn if he doesnt. Oh well.

cheymike - I disagree about the odds of Tiger winning majors vs. average golfer. The reason the majors are so tough, is they bring the best fields, due to the prestige and pre-quals. Tiger is the best golfer, so techincally it shouldn't affect him when the Top 30 all show up vs any other random week he chooses to play.

For a guy who is a marginal Top 50 player, it is more difficult vs. a weaker field say the week after any major.

He has plenty of years to get to 19, he will do it

@jrossbeck I didn't compare Tiger's odds against average golfers. I compared his odds of winning a major against his odds of winning any other given tournament. Saying he will or won't win any one of the 4 majors is like trying to say he will or won't win any of a different 4 tournaments. Personally, I think his odds are pretty danged good at any tourney he enters.

Tiger being Tiger...its likely that he will either A)Let his talents fade and slip into a post prime, chubby dad, smiling ambassador role while posting a fifth or two in the "Fall Season." B) He will REWRITE the game plan for a golfer getting older, dominating later and more than anyone in history. I can picture him watching Watson at the Open and saying, "59?! Hmmm...that gives me a shot to win 50 majors."

Banker85 says:
@colin: i think the latter is way more likely. I mean look at Vijay and Kenny Perry they are getting old but playing at a top level for sure good enough to win majors. He will 100% get to 19

colinw says:
Yeah. I was just being sarcastic. It's def the latter. Bet the house on it. I'd put his over/under at 25. I still think there's a shot he gets to 30. He's going to have at least two more stretches of super human stuff and then if he grinds to at least 50 years old, hes going to set the bar 100% out of reach. Now he could "walk away" but I don't see that happenning. He can take time off whenever he wants, isn't physically punished, doesn't have to deal with teammates etc. He probably will change the way we look at golfers in their 50's. Can't wait.

Hmmm. 2008 Tiger wins greatest US Open Victory ever on one leg... 2009 loses on Sunday to relatively unknown and loses a major for first time when he had the Sunday lead. Good Argument Somehow 1 billon dollars and second FEDEX cup dont mean a thing without the majors.

Selena Roberts used that same forum (back page of SI) this year to swipe at Lance as well. It was a very contrived and confusing rationale. Basically she just called him a jerk for no obvious reason. I guess it's just a schtick with her. Too bad. There's enough good reasons to knock people off of well deserved pedestals. She seems to invent them.

cjgiant says:
Tiger should break the record barring injury. Mainly because unlike any other golfer (since Jack), he is almost always in the hunt. In the last 14 majors he's played in the last 4 years, he was top 3 in 9, top 12 in 12 and cut in the other 2. And he's obviously proven he knows how to win.

scottland says:
Broads like this forget that Tiger just came off of reconstructive knee surgery to win the Fedex cup. He was the best player in golf this year. RECONSTRUCTIVE KNEE SURGERY. It wasn't a year up to Tiger's standards, and he was still the best on the course. He'll will 5 more, no question. The US Open is at Pebble Beach in 2010, you can pretty much hand his that trophy.
