Should Anthony Kim Be In Abu Dhabi?
By Kickntrue on 1/22/10
Scott McCarron ripped the PGA Tour and Anthony Kim for playing in the Abu Dhabi Championship instead of the Bob Hope Classic. There is some interesting stuff here- most notably to me the "conflicting events release request." I didn't know the PGA Tour had the right to force players to do anything. I thought they were all independent contractors.
"I think it sends a bad message when you're out chasing money over in Abu Dhabi," said Scott McCarron, one of 16 players named to the PAC last week. "Are you helping the PGA Tour when you do that? Absolutely not."

...

"The tour does not have to give the conflicting events release," McCarron said. "It's up to Finchem. He can do that. He can say, 'Anthony Kim, you can't go to Abu Dhabi. You've got to play here. Sorry.' For tournaments like the Bob Hope, when you have guys like Anthony Kim and some other guys, especially with local ties, he should be here at the Bob Hope.

"We're at the start of the season, we need sponsorship, we need everybody playing here. And I mean everybody. For me, being on the PAC, I would say, 'Mr. Finchem, don't let any guys out, at least the first couple weeks.'"
I'm assuming the release means that Kim could choose to play nothing this weekend, but the PGA Tour could say, "if you're going to play pro golf this weekend, it has to be here."

I had no clue this was in existence so I really don't have an opinion. I would've said, Kim should be able to do whatever the heck he wants, and I still kind of feel that way, but if there is a process in place from the PGA Tour as a rule of membership, then I guess they could invoke that. "You can do whatever you want, but you chose to join our group, so follow our rules." Seems like a lot of other membership clubs, and I'd agree the PGA Tour could certainly use the big names.

He should be at the Bob Hope. On the other hand what about Sergio Garcia? they dont want him to play the Hope classic? honestly who cares without Tiger.

Wasn't AK going to be trying to maintain dual membership (PGA and Europe)? And why are they speaking specifically about AK? Why no mention of Boo Weekley?

Looking at the score card from Abu Dhabi, Kim would have been better off playing in the Bob Hope.

@mjaber - Boo is at the Hope. Professional golfers are independant contractors, not employees! They can choose to play wherever they would like. If AK chose Abu Dhabi, go.

A lot of players don't like the format of the Hope. Phil being one of them. I really don't like watching it either. I am enjoying the coverage of Abu Dhabi much more.

Kaymer will win a major one day. He's unreal with great mental strength.
Why shouldn't Kim play in Abu Dhabi. By playing globally he is helping the PGA Tour-should he win on the PGAET, he'll have more fans following him on the PGA Tour when he's back in the USA.

The "HOPE" was a fun tourney to watch, even without the big name players. Bill Haas did great and everyone seemed happy. The Pigs got their guaranteed appearance fees at the CAMEL DUNG Open, and who cares about the PGA TOUR---until the prize money starts to slide and their perks go away-then they all become patriotic.. Problem number one is TOO MUCH MONEY given away for too little talent and effort, when even the also rans make nearly a million bucks a year.
