Phil Would Like To Tell You About Five Guys!
By Kickntrue on 5/12/10
I didn't need this story this morning. I promised my wife we'd go 7 days in a row eating ever meal at home (money savings + healthier)... but now I just want a burger! There is a Five Guys less than 2 miles from my office. Me wants it. My Precious...
Remember how Phil Mickelson wouldn't stop prattling on about Five Guys last week at The Players? "Best burger I've ever had," he said. Yeah, turns out Lefty owns rights to Five Guys franchises in Orange County.
Phil claimed to recently eat at Five Guys for 6 days in a row. Earlier in Phil's career he also used to talk about In & Out Burger constantly but later found out it's family owned and could not own a franchise.

Now I just want to know which he truly thinks is better.

[oob story time]

Kevin and I have been having a pretty good go at discovering the best burger in the USA recently and have (pathetically) been putting in some real effort in sampling what's out there. I realize there may be a local joint somewhere that has the best single burger- but I'm talking about a mass produced, can get it in lots of places burger. We're stuck in a gridlock between Five Guys and In & Out. I absolutely love both- but may give the nod to In & Out. Some of that may be because I like their back story and the fact that they are family owned. But- living around DC- I also fell in love with Five Guys and think it's amazing. Their story is similar but they chose to franchise and move throughout the US. I'm amazed in such a short amount of time where you can now find Five Guys. Kevin isn't as impressed with In & Out, but he's only had it once, so I think his judgement is a bit clouded. Every good burger needs a few changes. I think it's the crack they put in the patty that brings you back.

All that is just to say... we need Phil (and you guys) to help break the tie, but now I think Phil's judgement is clouded too.

Phil Owns Five Guys
In & Out or Five Guys?

I haven't had either, but if I see one in San Antonio this weekend, I'll give them a shot.

Honestly, if people thing In & Out Burger is competitive with Five Guys, that tells me that neither is as good as FatBurger. I believe they are a California-based chain, and thus may not be available nationwide, but it is by far the best burger chain I've come across.

Never had In & Out, so can't make a decision. But, you'd be hard pressed to beat Five Guys fries. Awesome!

I'd say Five Guys! Although, i've never had In & Out either. I'd love to be able to make a comparison though. Get some In & Out Burgers here in Ohio!!!

Backquak says:
There are 3 Five Guys in San Antonio, so maybe I can check them out.

I live in the east so only have regular access to 5 Guys, and they're great. But i've had In & Out and i have to give them the nod. Maybe because the have the secret menu (double-double animal style anyone?), maybe it's because it's a rare treat, but for me, they have the best mass produced burger.

But, for a smaller place? Louie's Lunch in New Haven, inventors of the hamburger (true!), has the best burgers i've ever tasted. Hands down!

kingwood hacker says:
Never had In & Out, but I think that the burger at 5 guys is crap compared to SmashBurger. Far and away the best burger I've ever had. The seasoned fries at 5 guys are awesome though.

sigmapete1 says:
5 Guys burgers are average. What makes the place great is the many many toppings they offer at no extra charge and the BEST fries I've ever had.

mmontisano says:
i've had both and i'm a 5 Guys guy. In-N-Out was bland to me. but, now that i know about the "secret menu," my next outing to an In-N-Out will be drastically different.

by the way, if you're ever in Ohio, go to Swenson's for true THE BEST burger you will ever have in your entire live. they get my nod for being the best.

Never had In & Out, so it is hard to compare, but 5 guys rocks.

you gotta try smashburger... i was turned to 5 guys, and it's a good burger, but my new fave is smashburger

I am a Five Guys loyalist and am amazed at how fast it has grown. Just a few years ago it was only in the DC region and it was a treat to be able to get to one. Now they are everywhere but still so delicious.

Smashburger is better than Five Guys...although both are very tasty :-)

ElGalloGigante says:
Every time I return to California, I make SURE that I have In & Out at least once. There's no comparison. I enjoy 5 Guys enough to eat there almost weekly, but if they left town, I wouldn't plan on seeking one out if I visited an area that still had a franchise.

Phil already owns a huge stake in Waffle House. Now he just needs to pick up a dinner place and he has all of his meals taken care of.

We have In & Out here in the UK but it is a drive thru / quick car service garage!
Think I'd prefer the burger selling kind!

I prefer In & Out for the burgers but hate their fries...my fav...the 4X4 animal style (one of their secret menu items that is not so secret). Very "nice" family biz. Back in the 90's...I noticed I forgot my wallet after I had ordered in the drive through line, was stuck until I got to the window and was going to cancel the order. They let me have the meal and said pay for it later. Maybe it was a one time thing...I dropped by the next day and they wouldn't accept payment. I became a very loyal customer by that act of kindness.

5 Guy's, decent burger. I like that you can get creative with the toppings...also agree they have great fries.

Torleif Sorenson says:
To @kingwood_hacker, @jaba9, and @traveling91: Thanks for giving us the recommendation for SmashBurger; I'll try it soon. But I would still like to find a place that does buffalo burgers, above-average fries *and* hot fudge malts...

legitimatebeef says:
Five Guys is great, but In N Out is even better. There is something singular about the Double Double, especially when its cooked up "animal style". It's a fast food frickin masterpiece. It's what a hamburger's all about.

Five Guys has plenty of burger options, wonderful french fries and free roasted peanuts though, and is IMO the next best thing for non West Coasters with no In N Out access. Like In N Out, it's a cut way above typical "fast food"; it's real food cooked up to order.

Bryan K says:
funny...no props to Steak and Shake or Sonic, who I think are the best burgers I can eat on a semi-regular basis (meaning more than once per year). I ate at a Five Guys for the first time about two weeks ago, and I have to say that I prefer McDonald's. In and Out is by FAR the best. Comparing them to Five Guys just isn' fair.

As far as the best fries....McDonald's and Grand Junction take the cake.

But

They aren't really in the same price category. Just had a (double) bacon cheeseburger and soda from 5G a few hours ago. $10 and change.

@bjohn13 I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but bringing McDonald's and Sonic into this argument is ridiculous.

Never had in and out but I was amazed by 5 guys how that burger just melts in your mouth. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Just gets pricey once you add the fries and drink. Need to save my money for golf

TravisMiller says:
In and out 4X4 animal style rocks...fries are ok if you get them HOT and animal style.

Would love to try a five guys but the nearest is 142 miles away...might take awhile before trying one.

We have a local Burger joint Call Brown Bag Burger...they are pretty good and you order your burger based on patty weight...much bigger than chain restaurants!

never had In & Out, but had Five Guys. They opened the first locations in the Chicago area about a year ago... It was good but didnt live up the hype in my opinion...

@ben crane- animal style may read "less-exotic" but it's a nice little extra "wow"

Just got a Five Guys in Salisbury, MD. Should check it out. I've had In & Out in CA north of San Fransisco. Good burger, but only had it once or twice. I'll have to go out west again to compare!

Bryan K says:
@Tee It High: My opinion is that Sonic and McDonald's are better than Five Guys. That's more of a statement of how much I dislike Five Guys than it is a statement of how much I like Sonic or McDonald's. Putting Five Guys on the same level as In and Out is simply ridiculous.

Panerai111 says:
In n' Out!

i've never had an in&out burger, but if they're better than 5 guys, then they definitely win because 5 guys is better than any other burger i've had out there (other than my own hand made grilled burgers of course).

Backquak says:
tried 5 guys this weekend in San Antonio, It was good, I like my home town Blue Sky better. I think 5G could be better if they didn't over cook the patties, I like em a little pinker. And the fries were ok but nothing special. No in and outs around to compare to, but I can't believe that 5G could be considered better than any other burger joint, they're just average.
