LPGA Hates Bloggers
By Kickntrue on 5/19/10
You'd think the LPGA would bend over backwards for any coverage they could get, right? Not so, according to Sean over at DeepRough.com. Sean applied for credentials to an upcoming LPGA event in his hometown. He thought it'd be a great chance to expose his fairly substantial blog audience to the inside of a golf Tour that doesn't get that much coverage. I mean.. seriously, how great would it be to interview a couple players and report on the behind the scenes happenings?
Dear Sean,

Thank you for your interest in covering the Sybase Match Play Championship. A summary of your organization’s media credential request is listed below:

Sean – Denied
That's the whole letter! Haha. Thanks LPGA. Way to make an effort!

This just doesn't make a ton of sense to me. I mean, I get it if it's the NFL. You can't just give any blogger or news organization access, but this is the LPG-freaking-A. They should at least look at applicants on a one by one basis instead of issuing blanket "no-blogger" denials. One look at Sean's would've showed them that he's a legit source of info and frankly would've only written great things about the event and the LPGA.

As a fellow blogger it almost frustrates me enough to try for a boycott the LPGA... except nobody watches that crap anyway.

I would put in again right away and request something higher. The fact that they're hurting for ratings as it is would make enough of an appeal to get past whatever minimum wage a$$ is printing the denial letters. I'm sure they're under orders for good reason - because a lot of bloggers out there are just one person with 5 or 10 people following. I think with the base that deeprough has, it would be able to get through and be seen for what it is. Try try again. I had to do that a couple times to get into some venues that weren't allowing professional photographers. You have to hit them where it counts --- in their wallet -- and convince them that it's going to put more dough in there.

sounds like some remnants of Carolyn Bivens still lingers in the Daytona headquarters. i'm sure once Mike Whan catches wind of it, it will be corrected.

If that is the whole letter, where does it say it is denied because he is a blogger. Or is that just your assumption.

It makes it so much worse that another blogger got credentials from the USGA to the U.S. Open.

Kickntrue says:
@wanewton- that's a fair question. Sean had applied in the past and was rejected for being a blogger. that rejection mentioned that specifically.

DeepRough says:
No specific mention of blogging in this one, just 'denied'. No reasoning. One could follow up, and press them on this. But, this isn't my full-time job and I have no real interest in fighting for a chance to help promote their product. I just figured, it's down the street...why don't I check it out, take some pictures and write a few posts about it.

@dtak84, interestingly enough, BunkerShotGolf ( twitter.com/BunkerShotGolf) was denied credentials to the U.S. Open. Not really all that shocking. But an LPGA event at a new venue?

dtak84 says:
@DeepRough agreed about the LPGA. Stephanie Wei (www.weiunderpar.com) is the one who got creds to the U.S. Open.

Based on the most recent post on her blog, I guess she got them to the Sybase too! Maybe it's just me they hate ;)

Kickntrue says:
@dtak84- yes, but she writes for huffington post as well as a couple other gigs associated with "real" journalism. Plus- she's been featured on Golf.com on the Monday Morning Roundtable... so you know, she's only "kinda" a blogger.
