I Love Morning Golf
By Kickntrue on 6/25/10
To me- there is nothing better than waking up at dawn, heading out to the course and getting 18 holes in before work. This morning- I got out at the way-too-late hour of 7am, took a cart, and had wrapped up my 18 by 8:55. Morning golf isn't perfect- I could do without the heavy dew, hitting your tee shot into the sun is a sure way to lose balls that could be in the fairway, and sometimes the greens aren't all cut yet, but man- it sure beats a 5 hour round and 100 degree heat!

I think if weather was perfect (75 degrees, 0 humidity) and nobody was there to slow me down, my ideal time to tee off would be about 10am, but since that doesn't exist, I'll take the first tee time of the day any time I can get it.

I know others feel the same- but I've met plenty of people who disagree. A lot of people would do about anything they could to NEVER wake up when the clock has a 5 in front of it (tip of the day for these people- don't have kids). I wouldn't call myself a morning person, but I just don't mind it for golf.

What about you guys? When is the perfect tee time?

I played a round about 2 weeks ago at 6:45am (I know - slacker, sleeping in like that...) and I think I was going on about 3 1/2 hours of sleep. I am NOT a morning person. Only took me about 20 years to figure out that I'm more of late night person.

But I ended up shooting a great round for me - under 80. I have to say I really enjoyed being nearly the group out on the course. I like not feeling rushed and just enjoying the morning round and had the rest of the day to sleep! Okay just kidding on the sleep part, but I was wide awake for my 9:00am conference call, which is pretty rare!

The absolute best tee time for me is 7am on a weekday. The course is wide open, the weather is great, and you'll have the rest of the day in front of you when you're through. The dew can help stick shots, but I do get annoyed with constantly having to dry everything that comes into contact with the ground.

Yep, playing by myself and being the first one out, I can usually play in 2hrs or less. You just can't beat it.

I'm on the early bus with the rest of you. I always find it amazing that it takes me forever to get out of bed and get ready to go to work, but it takes about 2 minutes to do everything I need to do if I am going golfing.

I love to play about 8 am as most courses around me don't open till 7:30. The dew is there for the front 9 but when I start the back 9 it is gone. Not many people on the course and I can finish before 3 hrs. This is on the weekdays. If it is the weekend I try to be the first or second group out. My wife hates that I wake up early on Saturday mornings because she wants to sleep in. I don't care I gotta get a round of golf in.

A group of us tee of every Sat and Sun morning at 6:00 am or a bit earlier. Wives love that we are home by 9:30 and available to them the rest of the day.

I regularly tee off right before I can actually see the first tee shot. Currently, that is at 4:30-45am, depending upon cloud cover. I'm going to be sad when the sunrise gets later next month.

-> will not miss the family time.
-> cheap as it is weekday.
-> fast as we are the starters.(easily withing 2.45 hours).

I was part of a dawn-patrol 4-some years ago and I will be going 9 solo at sunrise next summer when I move to a new membership at a club on the way to work. I now play wkdays @ 4:30 pm after work, but I get hungry and brain-dead after about 12 holes. Early morning is special as summarized by MJKern & Petetm, above. I like the stripes the ball makes on the greens - fun to make the first ones. Ditto footprints on the fairway. (But not the ruff!)

I am a morning person. I love early mornings. That said, I will have to say that I think that early morning is my least favorite time of day to actually play golf. Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to turn down a tee time at my favorite course, but the biggest problem I have is the fact that I'm allergic to grass. If I can be out there when they are not mowing, that usually works best for me. I'll play through it either way. It's just that I prefer to play around 9:00 when they are done mowing. I'm also not a fan of the dew, but that's another story.

I'm that guy on the greens mower at 4:45am, it usally takes me about 2hrs to mow all the greens at the course, but on the weekends their are times when I'm maybe 1 or 2 holes head of the first group, We have 1 guy who works nights and on the weekends we usally arrive at the sametime, I wish I was golfing instead of mowing.

I'm a morning person (wake up at 5:30 every day for work) and love to play around 6am a nice round of golf. Nobody around rushing you or waiting at the tee. Everything is calm and peacefull and it reflects in my swing. The first time i broke 90 last year was when i had a 6am tee time...

I'm definitely not a morning person. But if getting up at 5am means I get to play the sport that I love (or go running) then I can bare it.

I enjoy a morning round every so often, it has its qualities, but I enjoy twilight/late day golf much better. I'm done with all my crap for the day and I can relax, turn off the phone, and just play.

The earlier the better. The only problem I have is I do not know anyone else that likes early morning tee times. So I just have to show up as a single and hope to get on. If anyone is in the West Houston area and needs another for an early tee time I'm ready.

I'm an official member of the dew crew! Greens are always rolling as true as they will all day long when you are the first one on them.

Up at 5am, on the course by 6. Dew? Yes. Greens being cut? Yes. Being out early does have it's disadvantages, but the trade off is having the course to ourselves, the fresh clean morning air, beautiful sunrises most people sleep through. It really is the best part of the day. I'm always amazed when golfers don't want to get on the cousre early, but I guess I'm glad more don't come out. I like having the place to myself!

Why not play early if its a hot day you could have the rest of the day to play in the pool plus its more cheap

I would be the first off every morning if it were not for my 2 yr old daughter who insists on waking at 5:45am. I think when she is old enough to ride in the cart with me, the morning patrol will be in full effect.

rxman says:
oh yeah. The earlier the better. I pryed the doors open at courses, sometimes calling ahead to ask the first person in if they will let me go out. Many will not let me earlier than 6:45. I also found that just showing up way early helps, even without a phone call. You either get out early solo, or get paired up and meet another early golfer. I agree that AM is where I AM whenever possible.

adding to the repetition. I love to play in the morning. Beat the heat. Beat the crowds. Play as quick or slow as you want. Then eat lunch, shower, and you have the rest of the day to be with family. Awesome.

I do prefer the early morning tee time. It does for a quick round of golf and you feel good heralding the morning in while the world wakes up. The birds, squirrels, ducks, geese, etc. are all happy to see you. The other time I like is late evening. 6.30 pm on summer evenings.

I'm not a morning person, except on mornings I'm playing golf. It's getting 100 degrees mid-day here in the Carolinas already this season. Playing then just isn't going to happen. So I like to play the mornings. My regular playing partner doesn't play much more than once/month though, so I'm often showing up solo and because I generally have to play on weekends, I HAVE to show up before 7am or they won't be able to get me on. Sometimes I get paired up with another early morning golfer(s), sometimes I go out solo. I'm usually home by 10 a.m., which my family likes, and I get to beat the heat.

During the summer, I regularly play at 6:30 am or earlier on my local 9 hole executive course. It only takes about an hour or so to play 9, so I'm home by 8:00 am most days and its a great way to work on your game and get in a walk 3 to 4 times a week in the summer.

Scott Shields says:
The earlier the better. Had a 7am this Saturday and it was perfect. We were done with our 18 well before noon. And anyone that lives in Michigan knows how humid and gross it gets once that sun starts burning off the dew around 10am. There also seems to be much less wind in the morning, which I like.

Love morning golf!!! Earliest for me was in the middle of winter, I'm in CA so winter is still mid 70s :-)at about 5:45 in the morning. Literally as soon as the sun was coming up, I was tee'd up! Nothing beats not having to wait for slow people in front of you.

DiC says:
Haven't played any earlier than about 7am on a Sunday but stood on the first tee with the damp, fresh morning air and the sound of nothing but the birds soon helps you forget how tired you are having got up at 6am on a weekend.
It all makes one feel very calm................ until you slice your ball 100 yards into the trees off the first tee!!! AAGGAHH - BRING ME COFFEE!!!
