GolfCard Update / Mobile oob Future
By Kickntrue on 7/12/10
As some of you already know, GolfCard decided to end their relationship with oobgolf without notice.

Kevin and I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support over the last few days. I know a lot of you are very upset and have every right to be. We appreciate everyone having our back, but frankly, we understand as a consumer, you don't really care whose fault it is- you just want it fixed.

While the GolfCard app provided GPS functionality, it was Oobgolf that provided all of the critical backend data including course information, scorecards and all of the scoring functionality for uploading back to oobgolf for stat tracking. As we understand it now, if you do upgrade to the new GolfCard Pro, you will no longer be able to upload scores to oobgolf or link to our substantial database of golf course information and scorecards.

We regret that the actions of GolfCard have created not only an inconvenience for you, but, more importantly, it has interrupted the relationship between you and oobgolf. We're working as hard and fast as possible to restore the relationship we have enjoyed with you and help you avoid having to change to another vendor without having a voice in that change.

Here is the good news. We have been kicking around the idea of creating an oobgolf iPhone app for some time but have deferred to our mobile partners. Now, it looks like we’ve been given a reason to get into the game. We’ll have more details of the specifics of this soon, but we believe we can have a scoring app submitted to Apple within a week and a GPS app submitted a week or two later. Any app we create will integrate fully with oobgolf's stats. We will also be addressing other platforms such as Android following the iPhone app. In the meantime, we suggest you check out mobile.oobgolf.com as a possible substitute while we are in development.

Again, we really appreciate the support and hope you guys will bear with us for a couple weeks while we get an app built and available for you. We think it will be worth the wait and it will not require you to reenter any scores or map or trace any images.

Sincerely,

Andrew and Kevin

awesome news.

If you are looking for any development help for the iOS side of things (Apple devices) let me know.

That sounds great, the best thing about the previous versions of Golf Card was the dual GPS and Scoring capabilities. So I'm glad you've decided to go the dual purpose route.

One request...please don't forget about us non-American guys. i.e. allow us to put our own handcaps in and not limit us to the USGA system. Thank you

In the mean time I just won't upgrade my Golfcard app and will hopefully still be allowed to post my scores up to oobgolf until the oob golf app is made

Doesn't android have a larger following than Iphone at this point? I thought I read that somewhere.

That is great news. GolfCard was the best app out there but it still left a lot to be desired. Full support for all addict stats would be fantastic.

bplewis24 says:
While it makes me happy that there is some good news, it frustrates me to no end that you are prioritizing Apple consumers above all other users, as if everybody else is 2nd fiddle. iOS and Android should be on equal footing in this endeavor (US Market share is something like 40% to 29%, with Android trending up and iOS trending down) so it would be foolish and archaic to prioritize one and neglect the other...otherwise Android users will have nowhere else to turn for our scoring needs.
7/12/10

Kickntrue says:
@bplewis24 + all Android Owners - We hear you!!! Unfortunately, oobgolf = two people, one of whom barely knows how to use basic html tags. Kevin can only do one at a time and iPhone is still ahead. We are not forgetting you - just choosing some priority. :)

Terry222 says:
Outsourcing is a wonderful concept. The price estimates I got were a lot lower than I expected.

ponderous says:
@bplewis24: With respect... As an Android owner, I can appreciate the need to develop the iPhone version first. There are more iPhones users out there right now, regardless of how it's trending. Resources aren't infinite, so they must first be applied where they offer the most benefit. If they do both at the same time, spreading their attention and resources between the two, everybody waits. Let them work out the big bugs with the iPhone, and we'll have a better product once it's available to us our Droids.

As for temporary alternatives... For courses I've already downloaded, I will continue to use GolfCard, since I didn't update. For new courses, I plan to use SkyDroid for my GPS and enter scores and stats directly on mobile.oobgolf.com (a little tedious to switch back and forth, but not bad). Furthermore, two of my golf buddies also have smartphones and use oobgolf, so we can split scorekeeping and rangefinding duties when together.

clister01 says:
What about teaming up with the guys over at GolfShot? It's close to already being the perfect app (for me at least). Just needs syncing with oobgolf. Maybe subsequent versions could expand on a couple more statistics tracking once oobgolf syncing has been established.

Also, if you guys are going to make your own app PLEASE don't forget the importance of a clean and well designed LOOKING app. I always hated the graphic design of the score card portion of GolfCard. It was very ugly (not talking about the current version) and clunky to use.
7/12/10

Reslie says:
Guess I need to pay more attention to the forums! I already upgraded before I found out. Regardless, since you are headed toward releasing an OOBGolf iPhone app I'm willing to hand jam my scores into the OOBGolf web site. Until you guys get Apple approval. Go team.

mudfish says:
clister01... I agree with your suggestion about joining up with GolfShot GPS... it is an excellent app, and incredibly easy to use... I've tried almost all the golf apps out there, and GolfShot is far and away the best...

Here is a note I received from USHandicap.com as a result of the GolfCard switch...

It's been a couple of days since you registered on U.S. Handicap, and you still haven't established your USGA Handicap Index. If you want to establish a USGA Handicap Index, you will need to upgrade your membership to the Silver Package. The retail price for the Silver Package is $14.95, however, just by signing up, we've added a $1 credit to your account, which means you can get a USGA Handicap Index for less.

Good luck and hit 'em straight!

golfcard have been very shot sighted in doing this, not only have they ceased using oobgolf, but thye have also limited the handicap system to US based accounts ! not very good if your a UK player ! looking forward to you guys developing a new system ifor one will subscribe !

Great to finally see a dedicated app. Features I hope you include are:
International Handicaps, and the ability to manually set them
Scoring for up to 4 players (both oobgolf and non memebers)
Option to quick score for any selected player, as in just strokes
Side games such as Stableford and Match Play/Team Match Play
A simple clean interface

I would happily pay few £ just for a scoring app that included the features above.

aclopes says:
It is really great news. I don´t need USHandicap to manage my hcp, as it has been done in my home club. I use the application to keep all scores and work the statistics with oobgolf! I hope you have success with your apps, please with maps for iPod Touch (I don't have GPS on board!)

htfaber says:
I can share the feelings of many posts. As a European user Golfcard just became unuseable. Wow, what an upgrade...
A new app would ideally have the rangefinder (and general look) of Golfshot combined with the scorecard of Golfcard IMHO. They both have (had) good features. You guys now have the chance to look at other apps, listen to the oobgolf users and in time create the perfect app.
Good luck with it though!

Zepo1a says:
If we had CSV upload here, we could upload the CSV files GolfCard can email you (assuming they haven't removed that in the update also!)

I contacted GolfCard expressing my disappointment in oobgolf's removal.

Was it a money thing, did they feel you were overcharging them or something?

I don't think I'm going to update and see if somehow the support for oobgolf comes back in the near future.

Please work something out with them if that's what it takes!

Zep--

cpjolicoeur says:
@Zep

I'm working on writing a quick importer/uploader for the GolfCard CSV export feature. It'll just be a simple website where you can upload your CSV data, and then verify it is correct before uploading it to your oobgolf acct.

PM me your info of you want me to let you know when it is ready.
7/13/10

Zepo1a says:
@cpjolicoeur

Does oob support what you are doing with the csv upload thing?

Backquak says:
I am disappointed in golfcard, that was my favorite app. golfshot is good, I just didn't use it cause it didn't upload to oob. I see several people have suggested oob get in with golfshot, which would be great. Have you heard anything about that? Are they interested in linking up with oob? I've deleted golfshot from my phone, but I still have it on the computer
7/13/10

cpjolicoeur says:
@zep,

yes, I'm just converting the CSV data into oobgolf format that works with their developer API
7/13/10

nhpace says:
for the time being, it would be nice to have an email address target for an oobgolf user that you can email your scores to [via golfcard], have the target transform the csv and update the users scores in oob using the oob API's.
7/13/10

IMKMB says:
Successfully downgraded to old version.

I was one of those that upgraded before I realized the new version no longer linked to oob. However, I was able to download the old version and reinstall it on my Motorola Droid. You can find v1.14.9 at:

www.mediafire.com/?hwq4mwjrtzy

Downgrading did not effect past scores and data. Still able to upload scores but can't download new courses.

SingleDigits says:
Kevin/Andrew: while I can see a lot of benefits of developing your own iPhone or Android app, why not partner (perhaps in some exclusive fashion) with an existing application like SmartscoreCard or GolfShot GPS, or both, etc. BTW, I'm not associated with any golf app.

Rationale:
a. the development you put into a mobile app will take away from the main site
b. it will always be an ongoing development & support burden.
c. It will take multiple releases before it's fully functional & stable.
7/13/10

Kickntrue says:
@SingleDigits- Specifically to what you mention... we do work with SmartScorecard (still works today) and we've reached out to GolfShot on more than one occasion with no response. The approach you suggest is something we've really enjoyed though this has showed what can happen. The points you mention are all well-taken, though.
7/13/10

Matt Otskey says:
That's great! You guys definitely need your own app. Charge like $0.99 :-)

And PLEASE PLEASE don't forget about Android since that market is pretty close to being as large as the Iphone one.
7/13/10

mjaber says:
I think having multiple options is the way to go. Having another app able to integrate is great, because you guys can focus on the site. Having your own app is great, because you won't have any "GolfCard" issues.

I think having both, and giving people the option of which they decide to use it ideal.
7/13/10

gropper says:
well i was able to downgrade to the 1.xx version of golfcard by deleting the app on my iphone and and then syncing my phone with itunes which still had the old version on it. This only works if you have not synced since installing the upgrade. This will have to do until OOB is able to build the app which i will be purchasing.
7/13/10

tennesseeboy says:
USHandicap.com does not provide any details on how there statistics tracking works. No screen shots. No list of stats tracked. No trial period. You have to pay for a one year subscription then you get to see what you get for your money. Very Lame.
7/13/10

GolfGeek69 says:
Great move guys. I'll easily pay $10 - $20 to have an app that I know will continue to be supported. I am even willing to pay more. Common everyone, please don't get cheap. It is a one time cost, so let's support the guys that are trying to restore something that we all love. Think about it, if they don't you will have to pay double for the same functionality and be at other developers mercy. If they are willing to cut out OOB, what next, charge per course, or even worse. This is where we all need to step up and give a few of our well earned dollars to a good cause taht we all have screamed about.

for Android users, have you guys tried out YourGolf? it's the only other thing in the Android Market that uses OobGolf. I've sent in my suggestions on how to improve their app, but since installing it a day or two ago, they've already had one update with drastically improved the UI. Might want to check it out, it's free

I just got GolfCard last week after I got my iPhone. Loaded it Saturday night to set it up for my Sunday round, applied the update, and it became useless. If you'll go to your iTunes purchase history and report a problem with a purchase, Apple could give you a refund. It's a useless app to me and I didn't even use it once. I'm going this route and will probably use smartscorecard until the new app releases. GolfShot is $30 and I would easily pay that for an app that integrates with oobgolf and provides GPS and shot-tracking.

ponderous says:
@beedax... I haven't tried YourGolf yet, but downloaded it after the GolfCard fiasco and, like you, I am impressed with the improvements in the recent upgrade. It could use some more work (can't every app?) but you definitely can't beat the price. I'm going to give it a try this Thursday.
7/13/10

beedax says:
@ponderous I wouldn't mind paying for a decent oobgolf app, something that at least tracks the scores in a very efficient manner with a decent rangefinder. YourGolf needs some work. I've sent my suggestions over. The app lacks basic stuff like keeping a list of recently played courses. It'll have to do for now.

I just wanted to chime in with my support for your decision to create your own app. Im one of those who is pretty pissed at GolfCard's actions.

I think its possible to wipe the floor with GolfCard if the new OOb App is just as functional. While improved and quite functional, GolfCard still has some serious design issues, that, if improved upon, the new OOb app will be able to come out on top. Just dont forget the basics of having an easy to use and easy to read scorecard and GPS, and I really believe you guys will come out on top.

Best of luck!

kbelanger, thanks for the link to the original GolfCard App. I just switched back to it as well. I played a round today and had to switch between mobile oobgolf and GolfCard's range finder and while functional, it was a bit of a pain. Terry222 says:
Yeah, I beat up the YourGolf folks. Complained about the android UI looking nothing like the website promoted pages. They updated that abruptly. I also gave them about 4 suggestions to drastically improve their app but I haven't heard back on that one yet. If OobGolf reaches out to anyone I would think it would be these guys. I think they are based in Japan (not the greatest English) but they appear to care, at least a little bit, about their product. That and it's practically a finished product. A little more tolerance of downloading backend Oob stats and offline maps and I think it would be the best app out there.
7/14/10

Terry222 says:
Just an android suggestion, when you get to the point where you are integrating maps into the rangefinder, don't do it through Google Maps. I don't think they are going to change their caching policy anytime in the near future. The best alternative I've found is OruxMaps. It pull Google Maps when online but you can upload your own generated maps that kick in once your connection is down. I think they are a step or two away from everything needed for something like a golf app but I'm sure they could add the necessary requirements quickly if some sort of agreement was made.

You mentioned you were writing a website to upload your Golfcard CSV data. Would it be possible to email the scorecard of Golfshot to the website too? You mentioned you favoured the layout of Golfshot as well. I do too but I want to keep the oobgolf feature.
Would this be possible with the Golfshot email you think?

Andrew and Kevin keep bringing up mobile.oobgolf.com as an option. Take a look at it. I plan to try it during my next round. It is the only option that let's you enter chips and first putt distances. Even with the old version of GolfCard, I had edit the uploaded score to add these stats.
7/14/10

bplewis24 says:
I personally don't expect the app in a week. I plan on using the non-upgraded version of Golfcard until a better solution can be found. If I have to use a course that hasn't been downloaded yet, maybe I'll use mobile.oobgolf.com or Yourgolf. Not sure yet.

My bottom line is that I will continue to support oobgolf if they put out their own app and I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount for it. If they prioritize the iPhone and make Android owners wait weeks for an app, then I'll simply go elsewhere and support somebody else.

I wrote an email asking GolfShot if they'd considered integrating oobgolf syncing/upload. Here is the response I got:

"Thanks for the heads up. We are aware of the Golfcard/Oobgolf break-up and hear that Oobgolf is developing their own app. It's interesting on their site they say they have contacted us but we haven't received any contact from anyone at Oobgolf.

In the past (a year ago) when we tried to broker a partnership with Oobgolf they wanted far too much money to be reasonable. Not sure if this factored into the Golfcard's decision to part ways.

Sadly partnerships are rarely cheap and never easy.

Best regards."

Not saying either side is right or wrong (there are two sides here) but for those holding out for GolfShot to work with Oobgolf it looks like it's not going to happen. Let's hope the official Oobgolf app is as good as some of these other apps and not a rush/hack job. I agree with Tennesseeboy above... this all seems a little optimistic... great apps take time, manpower, and lots of work...

@htfaber- We don't want to rule anything out. They'd certainly be a very interesting partner. We are currently evaluating our entire API strategy as this is the 2nd time someone has bailed on us. While they have every right to do so it does hurt the customer. Ours and theirs.

Don't shoot the messenger. I forwarded you guys the e-mail. @bplewis24 - Sure, Golfcard used to track chips (count, not distance), but you had to manually fix up your score on oobgolf after uploading the score card, as it appears that either the oobgolf API does not support that statistic, of Golfcard 1.x did not support the upload of that statistic... Looking at ushandicap.com, of the courses I've played this year (all in Canada), one doesn't exist at all, 2 don't have tee info, 2 have only one set of tees, one has 2 sets of tees. On oob, the only course that doesn't have at least 3 sets of tees marked is the one that doesn't exist on ushandicap, and it's only in it's 3rd year. Lucky for me I'd already downloaded the courses I wanted to play this year, so I should be able to continue to use my old version of Golfcard until oob gets their new app up and running. I'll be dropping golfcard if oobgolf is out of their picture.

Well this does sound promising (although one week for the basic app plus one more for the GPS sounds like an unrealistically short timescale).

One request here from an iPod Touch user, please include the option to download the GPS images, or at least a diagrammatic equivalent so we can play without a data link (i.e. offline). This is the feature that I was looking forward to with the new version of GolfCard, even if tapping the screen to set the current ball location was always going to be approximate. I still don't know how far I can hit the ball! Well, I know it's not very far but...

Backquak says:
The thing I liked about golfcard was the ability to keep score and stats for multiple players and the side games were great too. I never used the rangefinder cause I have the original iphone, and the reason I don't use the mobile oob is because I would only be able to track one player. golfshot is easy to use but it doesn't upload to oob, so I don't use it (not to mention, it's $30) so if you can make an app that tracks stats for multiple people( and not just oobers cause not all my players are) is easy and fast to use, has side games, and upload to oob, and I guess everyone else uses the gps, so you need that too.

Just rebuild the Golfcard app and call it the OOBgolf app. I'll happily pay € 8 again if you can do that.

Then just mod OOBgolf to include all the hybrids ;-)

DP says:
I'm the same as Backquak. Love the side games. I'm not really good enough to need to know exact yardage and I can eyeball so I know how hard to swing which club. And of course the auto upload to OOBGolf.com and all the stats.

DiC says:
Agree with jpjeffery on the support for touch users and being able to touch the screen for current ball position, realise this isn't as accurate as gps but only have a touch and don't really want to pay out for an iPhone for one golf app. Didn't have the original golfcard but was really looking forward to these features. Glad I read this before downloading!

Also, I will be happy to pay for a GolfCard copy called the Oobgolf App :). GolfCard now that it does not sync to oobgolf is useless for me.

jmorales says:
But something I do like about GolfCard is the ability of keep stats of average strokes in the holes you play: when playing again in a course you have played before it gives you the last club used in that hole, average strokes, average putts, average chips...

+1 for ANDROID

On a more productive note... I currently use an app called SkyDroid for my GPS needs. It tracks FCB of greens and you can mark obstacles as well. It has a huge database and you can always add/edit on their website. They seem like they are looking for partners so it might be a great idea. It currently doesnt have any scoring integration but I think they said they were going to add it

Just when I had been using GolfCard for over a year, they pull this stunt. I was excited about their upgrade and kept checking for it. Finally it came and (while I was attending a wedding) I upgraded the app. Now, one of the best features is simply gone? Wow. I hope you guys can get a decent app together. This site has been much more helpful to me than GolfCard was.

"mschad says:
@bplewis24: How fast do you think one guy can write multiple platform applications?"

According to some developers who develop on both platforms, pretty quickly. You do realize that Golfcard released their update on both platforms in the same week, right? The bottom line is this is about respecting your consumer base. Why do you think everybody is ready to bolt on GolfCard? They didn't show they cared about the consumer. If oob does the same thing, how are they any better? It's an easy decision for them: they can either prioritize one platform and alienate the other 50% of their customer base, or they can hold off a short period of time and release both at the same time. If they do the former, I'll no longer support them. If they do the latter, I'll buy the app AND re-up my Addict affiliation.

I know you are probably overwhelmed, but some thoughts on what i find most useful in a scoring app. The most important part for me is the scorecard part. There are plenty of GPS things out there, but the ability to just do the scoring & stats without the GPS would be great. Also the ability to track stats (at least in the app) for non-OOB members. While I'm on OOB and some of my regular playing partners are as well, I like being able to use the phone to record scores for whoever is playing. Obviously, full stats aren't necessary for the non-oob'ers, but basic scoring stats & handicap information based on inputted rounds is a big bonus. Thank you guys for taking your time here to actually listen to the customers and work on putting together a product for the customers, not for some paysite with extra fees.

(Disclaimer: I'm the smartSCORECARD dev). smartSCORECARD+ has just been updated reinstating all its original functionality. I will keep it at the reduced price of $0.99 for a week, but then it will go back up to its original price of $4.99. Remember that it live-syncs with oobgolf if you are a member, and you can play with non-members, record their scores, and email scores to anyone you like.

@chuck.han Thanks for the "smartSCORECARD+ On Sale" information - but I'm still on iOS 3.1.2 due to several reasons ... ;-)
That's the reason why I haven't installed the SONOCADDIE

Therefore the "oobgolf iPhone App" should be able to get used under iOS v3.0 to ensure that everyone can use it...

jpjeffery says:
@bplewis24 That seems a bit harsh on Oobgolf! This whole situation isn't of their doing. They were as surprised by this as the rest of us. There's only two of them and only one of them is a techie. I'd bet running Oobgolf isn't their full-time job, and if the Oobgolf techie hasn't any experience or knowledge of programming Apps for the Droid then it's not an unreasonable decision to decide to do the iPod/iPhone App first, since that user-base is greater than that of the Droid user-base.

So go on, cut them a little slack! :-)

I'm no developer, but what I understand about the Android and iPhone SDKs is that the iPhone's is very easy to use (more so than Android's). And as jpfeffery said, the iPhone has a bigger install base. I don't doubt that an Android version will be available, but it certainly makes sense that the iPhone version would be available first.

Terry222 says:
Bleh...this topic is getting old. The most we can hope for at this point is that the oob folks keep us informed of their progress. It wasn't their doing but at the end of the day the lack of a good mobile app does detract from this site.

zeg says:
@bplewis24: GolfCard has been working on this update for a long time, it's not like they just whipped it together for both platforms in a week. If OOB were to release both at the same time, that'd mean holding back whichever was done first. Is that really taking care of their customers, or is it harming some of them just for appearances? With a team their size, they've got to pick one or the other to do first, and it's silly to feel like you're being ignored because you happen not to be on the side that ends up first. If they refuse to do an Android app, then your ire would be better placed.

Also, anyone who bought GolfCard just for the oobgolf integration, see my comment in the other thread about response to the GolfCard situation. I was able to obtain a refund for my recent purchase on the grounds that they misrepresented the features of their App. Not sure if this is possible for everyone, and it probably didn't hurt that I'd only had it for 2 weeks before they broke it, but it's worth a shot.

I am so looking forward to your app. I used the new Golfcard Pro app today. It not only doesn't upload to oobgolf who ever developed it was obviously not a golfer. They don't even have a 4 iron on the list for club used off the tee and they've completely eliminated hybrid clubs from the list. I tried to leave a comment on Golfcard website but there's no place to do it. For now I'll use Mobile Oobgolf and wait breathlessly for the new iPhone app.

@Reslie The 4 iron doesn't appear on your list because you've not listed it as an available club in your golf bag. This list is in the details of you in the 'Golfers' section. Think you'll find the hybrids there too.

:)
7/18/10

Reslie says:
Well great! So part of the benefit of my upgrade to Pro was to have clubs dropped from the default profile. Must be an undocumented feature. And explain to me why a 4 iron would be missing from a "default" club list if the developer even had a clue about golf.

MartijnL says:
@chuck.han: I bought the app but I don't think the app is ready to go back to the $4.99 price point in its current state. The rangefinder is pretty much useless as it is right now (lack of markers and bad UI, the second being worse than the first) which leaves me without a way to determine yardages. For scoring I miss the "#of chips" stats (to determine up&down).

I upgraded my version of GolfCard to try the new features. I've always edited the scores on OOB to added more stats so not be able to upload is not the end of the world for me. I used the app for a particularly bad round Saturday, I pulled up the score card a couple of times after the round to marvel at my bad play. Saturday evening I open up the app so that I could start entering the numbers into oob. The score card in GolfCard was empty. The round was there but with all zeros. Wow, how's that for progress.

barko says:
Please open up the API again so other developers can code for OOB on Android. There's plenty of room for multiple apps. Some want just a score card, some want GPS, all want upload to OOB. Some want iPhone, some want Android. It's great that OOB is working on an iPhone app, but there are plenty of other coders who can drive traffic to OOB with their apps. I don't understand the motivation to stop giving out API keys. Seems to me you win by having more apps available.

Things I would enjoy in an app:

1. GPS
2. Trace function for courses where the maps are blurry.
3. I'd like to be able to push a button every time I arrive at my ball so that the app records the distance of every shot and records average distance of clubs over time.
4. A good statistical tracking scorecard.

Just want to express my support for an oob native application. I sure hope the developer took a long and good look to golfcard's interface because that is the best I've seen in any rangefinder / scoretracking app (at least for Android it is!). Large buttons, no keyboard entry of scores in the field. Would be great to have the ability to preload maps (I've barely got 2G reception on my home course!), if possible with strokesaver-like schematic overviews.

I also want to cast a vote for support of the EGA handicap system and the use of the metric system instead of imperial.

As for GolfCard, I think they partnered up with a commercial backbone with no option to back out. Too bad. The folks at ushandicap.com are not friendly and willing to help in case of problems but they do not understand the world is larger than the USA.
