I'm Officially On The Lexi Thompson Bandwagon
By Kickntrue on 7/26/10
I was weary of Michelle Wie turning pro at a young age, but for some reason I have no such hesitations when it comes to 15 year old Alexis Thompson. Sure, I could talk about Jiyai Shin winning the Evian Masters yesterday in France and taking over the women's world #1 spot again, but I'm much more interested in the 2nd place finisher, Alexis. She made $242k for her -13 finish (including -5 final round) and now has two top 10 finishes (Women's US Open) in her first 3 professional starts.

I know a lot of people point to the fact that unlike Wie (the most obvious/logical comparison), Thompson learned to win before going pro (whereas Wie was all built on talent), but I'm not going to speculate in that department. What I do know is right now Thompson is a better player than Wie and things are only looking up.

The sad thing for Thompson, and it's all timing and luck, Wie has already made more money from sponsorships than Thompson will probably make in her whole career. Sure the money will come for Thompson, but Wie sort of hit the lottery with her talent and the market at the right time. Still- Thompson just made in a weekend what a lot of us make in 5+ years, so I'm not shedding too many tears. Here's one thing I know for sure, when Thompson is playing and near the top of the leaderboard, it makes me want to turn on the LPGA and there aren't too many situations where that is the case.

Same here. I was stoked to see her at the top of the board. When she made the birdie putt to tie for the lead i went nuts and my girlfriend asked what the big deal was. She did not have my enthusiasm and didn't really know what was going on LOL. Lexi's gonna be big on tour.

@birdieXris- though to explain to your girlfriend why you're going nuts for a 15 year old girl.

Haha, that's actually the best part of the whole thing. She comes in and i'm trying to explain why it's so important and the only answer i get is "she's 15? really??"

my wife was the same way when i was telling her about Wie all those years ago. so now when i tell her about Lexi Thompson, she just rolls her eyes and says "Another Michelle Wie, huh?"

i was rooting for her to get into that playoff. if Jiyai Shin didn't make that last putt, i think she would have stolen the show.

She certainly didn't start her career off with the fanfare and hoopla that Wie got...which, I think, is a good thing. We don't need to see another over hyped player crash and burn. I'd like to see her star rise for sure.

Sucks she cant play in the British Open because her qualification went null as she turned pro..

Curious if she decided to go to college, could she play college golf or is it too late for her?

birdieXris says:
She's turned pro> its' too late. She could apply to get her Amateur status back but she'd have to stop playing the LPGA like, right now, in order for them to even consider it. Thing is, she's not even a member of the LPGA yet. I think she needs to be 18.
