I just can't do it... (not me, btw)
Preferred Golf Headwear
By Kickntrue on 7/28/10
Our poll suggests most oobers wear baseball caps (I'm one of them). I'm trying to figure out why. For some reason the idea of a visor is just ridiculous to me, but I realize logically it makes no sense. I mean, it should provide everything a baseball cap does, except keep you cooler, right? Well, that still doesn't make me think Brandt Snedeker looks any less douchey. Any time I've ever worn a visor, it lasts about 10 seconds before flipping it upside down and mocking Jesper Parnevic, who pulled off an even more amazing feat by wearing an even more stupid looking hat. I will giving him credit though- with the flipped up bill for figuring out a way to get a 2nd sponsor on the hat.

But still.. "logically," doesn't make any sense. If anyone could help me answer this question (it's been bugging me all day), I'd appreciate it. I feel like I'm doing the right thing by wearing a baseball cap, I'd just like to be able to rationalize it.

Oh- and anyone wearing straw hats, bucket caps, painter hats, or no cap at all while golfing- please chime in as well. Is it style, or is there a reason?

Wearing a visor makes no sense to me, especially in hotter areas of the country, (like Louisiana for example)...as a visor does not protect your head from the sun...

dc8ce says:
That's the key: sun protection. If it wasn't for that, I'd likely wear a visor to keep the head cool.

Optimus Prime says:
I answered cap in the poll, but I actually wear both. I like the visor in spring and fall when the sun it not so hot. I wear a cap in the summer to protect my head. During the late fall time and early spring period, I don't like to wear anything.

@optimus prime- i do hope you mean just on your head ("During the late fall time and early spring period, I don't like to wear anything.")

I wear a visor, I don't know why. I just hate the way I look in a baseball cap. As for sun protection, I have hair.

SD Charlie says:
I am a baseball cap guy - hell, I have at least a dozen different ones at home, with a regular rotation of 5 or 6. Visors never appealed to me, just not my style. I like the cap, since it lets me show spirit for a favorite team, it shields my eyes, and comfortably keeps my hair out of the way.

tennesseeboy says:
No hair. Must wear cap.

By the way. You guy should post the results from all polls so we can explain our answers.

My melon gets a bit burned when I wear a visor...I also have taken to wearing the big floppy hats to protect my face from the sun. 1 word - melanoma!!!

@Kicknture - Clarification: I don't like to wear anything on my head. LOL

Bryan K says:
The visor gives me a ridiculous tanline since I shaved my head (for good) a few weeks ago. So I usually wear a baseball cap except on the extremely still and hot days in the Spring before my ears have been exposed to the sun. Then it's the bucket hat. Why? Because it protects my ears and neck while I'm waiting to build some resistence to the sun. When I went to Florida in May, I wore strictly a bucket hat.

i've seen people wear a newsboy hat a few times, but they promptly get made fun of by the people in my group.

i've always wanted to wear a visor, but it doesn't make sense to me in the long run.

mjaber says:
A friend of mine made the mistake of wearing a visor on our July 4th round one year. He had the most amusing tan/burn line after we finished.

That, I believe, is why cap > visor

birdieXris says:
i wear all kinds of hats. Caps, buckets, scallys, fedoras, and visors. I only own one visor and one fedora though. 3 scallys and like 12 caps. The caps are just the preferred headgear for me. I dunno why. I like to match my outfits. could be because of my thinning hair. Plus i can wear a cap out somewhere without looking like a douche. Visor, not so much.

No votes for the umbrella hat? tinyurl.com/2antw3f This one apparently modeled by Wilford Brimley's younger brother?

Bryan K says:
You know...another thing that highly influences what kind of hat I'm going to wear is the fact that I need a place for my ball marker.

If we still have golf over T-Day weekend this year like we did last year, I'm going to wear a Pilgrim's hat. I'm also thinking of donning a sombrero for el cinco de mayo next year.

But one thing I have to say about visors....when I had hair, they were much, much, much cooler than a regular hat.

i like to spike my hair up like ian poulter so i wear a visor.
sun protection? i spray my head with that spray sunscreen haha
it works, and its like extra hair gel

hp says:
I have no choice. I have to wear a visor and at maximum size, where the velcro tips just barely overlap. My noggin is too big. 95 percent of baseball caps, bucket hats, and sun hats are too small for me.

MikeyBomp says:
I am a life long baseball capper. 40 years since my first little league cap. I am going to try to switch teams. Just yesterday I ordered a visor. It may not last longer than one look in the mirror, as I too think they are douchey!!

thunderthor says:
I'm wearing a cap out there but I'm considering switching to a hat as the sun gets a bit intense here in AZ.
Visor + AZ sun + Balding head = Funny for onlookers, bad for me.

Clint24 says:
I wear my cap, well, because I wear it all day every day. Its easy for me because I dont have to worry about combing my hair and stuff and its quick and easy. Like theyve said above, its the easiest way to show off your favorite team, and for me, thats every day. I do have a visor, but I just cant stand to wear it. Personally, I can not stand the bucket hats. They just look to stupid to be real. I'm a little old school, being 16, and think that all hats should have a bent visor.

sjduffers says:
My hair started leaving me way before I even began playing golf, so a cap (or some other hat) is necessary.

jev says:
Default nothing. Leather hat when it rains heavily (2, maybe 3 times a year?). Baseball cap if it's not too hot and the position of the sun is an issue, visor when it's very hot (my homecourse is located in the woods, lots of shadow but it still can be hot out there).

mdbuschsr says:
Right now it's a ball cap. I am looking for another good sun-hat. I had a tilly, but it shrunk when I washed it. If I had my way, I wouldn't wear a hat. But the sun had it's way with me long ago and melanoma has a way of changing your opinion of what stylish is.

Matt F says:
No hat here...I look at the pro's with the "nice" tan lines and think no thanks. I'll only wear a cap if it starts to rain on the course.

I wear a baseball cap pretty much every day (go sox!) so i switch it up to a painters cap (see Camillo Villegas) when i golf. Visors look ridiculous on me. I have a couple....still can't rock them though.

tartantoml says:
I use a baseball cap, but only when playing "into the sun" for following the ball. We usually play early (7am) and it is not too much about sun protection as we are done before 11am.

mschad says:
Straw hat here. Used to wear baseball cap until my wife bought me this. No matter what I wear though, it is for sun protection. Other wise I never wear a hat/cap.

DiC says:
I really don't suit hats although I do wear a baseball cap if the sun's out when I play.
Would love to have the courage to wear a straw trilby type hat ( www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod ) although I don't think I could pull it off without looking like a right pillock!

ElGalloGigante says:
I either wear a straw fedora/trillby style hat or nothing at all. I wear Wayfarer glasses (clear and sun) and the hat allows me to keep my glasses in place during a round. A ball cap does the same, but the fit is tighter so the glasses dig into my head. Plus, the the weave lets sweat evaporate quickly and enough air in to keep your head cool in the Texas sun.

Banker85 says:
i wear hat 98% of the time or no hat. I find it keeps the sweat from pouring into my eyes and dripping down my face on hot days. They keep me cooler. Never wore a visor, those just seem like they are for girls who play tennis...

Have plenty of hair for sun protection and have been wearing a visor lately. Seems cooler than the hats. I live in Texas and I need all the coolness I can find during the summertime.

I still have my hats but have been wearing them less. I can't wear sunglasses though. Just don't like them.

Hair for sun protection, spiked hair like Ian Poulter, and a less douchey visor means you don't look like a douche. Plenty of younger guys on tour wear visors without looking like idiots. The visor in the picture looks like it's from 1996 and worn by David Simms

Swingem says:
Cap for sun, Seattle Sombrero for rain. Never could dig on the visor look, but thought about one of those visors with the built-in Ian Poulter hair for fun.

A cap. More so for getting into the right mind frame. All part of the set up: get clubs out of car, put on cap - now ready to play :-) I guess habit more than logical reason. Great question to ask though, one that you never think about until someone points out the obvious. Looking back, it is probably because when I watched the pro-golfers on the TV, they all had caps on, so then did I...

PabloRiv says:
For the real hot and sunny days I wear a straw fedora, but most of the time I wear a Kangol 504 - the tropic ventair versions are cooler than a basball cap and looks nicer IMO. My oob pic is a wool 504 with ear flaps - very nice in the cold -and my wife laughs whenever she sees me in it.

I prefer a newsboy/golf cap type of hat, or a fedora. It just makes me feel more like a golfer. I will bust out PBR trucker hat on occasion though.
