Actually- Old School Pavin is pretty scary.
Jim Gray vs. Corey Pavin
By Kickntrue on 8/12/10
Apparently sports writer Jim Gray and US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin almost threw down yesterday... Awesome! So Gray quoted Pavin in an article saying that Pavin would pick Tiger as a captain's pick no matter what. Pavin says he never said that. Sounds worth fighting over...
In the heated 10-minute confrontation in the media center Gray thrust his finger into Pavin's face. Pavin said Gray called hm [sic] a liar and said, "You're going down."

"He said, 'You know what was said," according to Pavin. "And I said, 'I did not say that.' That's when he called me a liar and said I was going down."

"I'm just not going to let somebody call me a liar and make up something about me. He got upset and his eyes were a little odd and he put his hand in front of my wife, Lisa, and I just took his hand and moved it away. You do not put your hand there. And he said, 'I didn't touch her. I didn't touch her.' And I said, 'I don't care. Just get your hand away from her.'"

"I've known him for a long time. I guarantee you beyond a doubt I did not say, 'I am picking Tiger Woods.' Absolutely not. No. 1, I wouldn't pick a player now. I have until Sept. 7 to do it. And of all the people I know in the media business, he would not be my first choice to tell that to. He wouldn't be my second or third or fourth, either. And you can quote me on that one."
I don't want to sound disrespectful to either of these guys, but how bad could this have really been? A couple old guys yelling and pointing figures pretending to have the stones to fight? That happens every time I go to the grocery store and cut one of them off in the diaper aisle. Of course we're sharing that aisle for totally different reasons.

I'm totally with Jim Gray on this one... seems like Pavin said something off the cuff to him and never thought it was going to be reported and now that it is --- he's in major deny mode.

Anytime you are talking with the press, 'off the record' doesn't exist. You have to know that going in.

Though I can sympathize with Pavin a little.

Phillip Woeckener says:
Jim Gray is a scum sucking bottom dweller. Anyone getting the vibe off the internet would recognize this easily. Gray is the same a-hole that threw Pete Rose under the bus on national TV, and made LeBron James into a tool a month or so ago.

Gray has no credibility, whereas Pavin is respected in all golf circles. Here is hoping that Golf Channel has the stones to realize it was a mistake in ever hiring this asshat in the first place.

@Phillip- while i'm not disagreeing with your assessment of Gray (not agreeing either)- the LeBron thing was on LeBron. James insisted Gray be the one to interview him. LeBron made himself look like a tool.

Pavin's nickname is Bulldog. He's 5ft 9in and weights maybe 150lbs when he's mad.

I know Pavin, I know their family personally. Corey and Lisa are wonderful, kind people. Corey knows the media business and understands the press. Pavin simply WOULD NOT have said something 'off the cuff', to Jim Grey of all people, especially something that could easily be construed as something else. Jim obviously just saw the opportunity to make a story that would overshadow everything going on this week and he took the shot. Jim Grey is a surly guy, just ask any golf writer...

Pavin apparently kept his cool the whole time until Jim Gray started waving his hand in Pavin's wife's face telling her to go away, that's when Pavin grabbed his hand.

i agree with everything Phillip Woeckener said. Gray needs to go away instead of trying to fight for whatever credibility he may have left.

Seems like more and more sportswriters are forgetting that they report the sports news and are starting to think they are part of the sports news. I would put this Gray guy on the same level as TMZ. As this is a family friendly website, I will not detail my thoughts on TMZ.

I agree Jim Gray is a jerk. That being said, this is very odd. Considering how Pavin reported that whatever was said using terms such as "mis-interpreted", versus "a bold faced lie" (at least what I heard), for Gray to get so upset makes me think he either has a leg to stand on or he's a bigger jerk that I thought. Gray should know how this works, too. If Pavin did let something slip, Gray reported it, and Pavin backtracked (gracefully), it's not like we haven't seen it all before.

Don't forget, these guys do this for work - their jobs. And vouching for someone as a good guy or whatever is kind of irrelevant. When we "go to work" (not just in the literal sense) we enter a world with different relationships and ranks and etiquette. Even if Pavin said it, or was heard to say it from a source, if Gray puts him on the spot, Pavin can deny and make Gray look bad.
Gray is trying to get the scoop - it's his job as a sports media sensationalist. Some people gut cattle. His job is hard, I'm sure, or else everyone would be doing it. Though it seems he let the Lebron deal go to his head and now he thinks he can be the spotlight and eclipse his subjects.
