Wake Up Jimmy!

Jim Furyk overslept this morning, missing the start of the Barclays Pro-Am and was therefore disqualified from the first FedExCup playoff event.
Furyk overslept Wednesday and was late for his pro-am time in The Barclays, leaving PGA Tour officials no choice but to disqualify him from the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events.

A two-time winner on tour this year, Furyk is No. 3 in the standings as the race for the $10 million prize gets under way at Ridgewood Country Club without him.

It is unlikely he will fall too far down the standings, although he eliminated any chance of improving.

"I'm kicking myself," Furyk said. "I have a way of climbing into situations that are all my fault."

Furyk sets his alarm on his cell phone, and he awoke at 7:23 a.m. to find out that his phone lost power overnight. He threw on some clothes and shoes, bolted out of his hotel room and rushed to Ridgewood, arriving at 7:35 a.m.

The pro-am was a shotgun start that began at 7:30 a.m. Furyk was to start on the 11th hole, and he realized when he arrived that he had no chance of getting there on time.

Furyk was in such a rush that he did not put on a belt or socks, and he still had not tied his shoes.
Well- on the plus side, Furyk gets an unexpected weekend off. Then again- he had (still has) a decent chance of winning $10M in the next 4 weeks and isn't doing himself any favors.

I'm going to give Furyk a pass here, mainly because he's from Pennsylvania. It's a PGA Tour rule I certainly understand, but it does seem a pretty harsh penalty, especially when tee times are at 7:30am. Crap happens I guess. By the way- if any oober was at the Pro-Am and somehow snapped a pic of sockless, beltless Jim Furyk we'd be very happy to post it!

Banker85 says:
how bogus, he would have missed the first hole only. He could have had someone run back and get him socks and a belt. I am sure the amatuer was bummed, i would be like wheres Jim? oh hes five minutes late and now cant play F this i want my $3k back!

@miketomei- yah... who knows. cell phone was dead.. but room phone should have worked. who uses a cell phone for a alarm at a hotel? i mean... me, but my wake up doesn't have $10M on the line.

@banker85- that's a good point too. didn't think about that. it's why the rule is there in the first place- so the people paying don't get screwed out of their pro, but in this case- they still did.

@kickntrue -- i do too. I'm with you, if i'm playing for 10 million dollars, i'm sure to get the front desk to give me a wakeup call too. haha.

These guys spend a lot of time on the range and practice green before teeing off. You would think his caddy would have missed him an hour before his tee time and started looking for him. I don't know much about Furyk but if this happened to Tiger........

Fluff, you're fired!!! I'm sure Fluff tried his cell phone but of course wasn't working. Really possible that Fluff didn't know where Furyk was staying.

It doesn't say in the article, but perhaps he still played out the Pro-Am to satisfy the commitment to the amateurs?

Always gotta set 2 alarms.

If the only thing I might miss is the free breakfast at the hotel, then I might go with one alarm. If it's an important business meeting, I always have two. Ten million would qualify as an important business meeting.

I do happen to use my cellphone as an alarm clock in the hotel, which is where i am at now.....but It is plugged in and charging while I sleep.

@jalsing - good question. To be a standup guy, and assuming he was allowed, I'd think Furyk would have still tried to participate. Although the penalty of a DQ does not give a player much incentive to still participate in a pro-am he is not even a hole late for.

The first thing I do when I check into a hotel room, and I spend about 100 nights a year in them, is to unplug the clock radio. Before I began that practice, I can't tell you how many times I had been awakened in the middle of the night by some jerk who set it for some ungodly hour as a sick joke.

@TravisMiller: what if the power fails? Don't rely on your phone requiring juice if something important is on the line. You gotta' love those modern phones that require power every single freakin' day!

Matt F says:
@bducharm - Do you really think that Fluff didn't know where Jim was staying? He was probably in the same hotel, quite possibly in the room next door. That's my assumption, unless there are players that actually don't let their caddies know things like that.

Banker85 says:
@jev: i always use my cell as an alarm never failed. As long as you know you have a full charged battery your guaranteed to wake up.

jev says:
@Banker85: the keyword being "full charged". I guess most of the guys on the tour own some type of power-hungry smartphone. If you use one of these heavily for a day, chances are it's empty somewhere in the middle of the night. And no alarm will sound if they're out of juice, shut down or simply crashed for some stupid reason.

Back to Furyk. If indeed his phone "lost power", we can only assume the battery of his his phone was drained. Maybe it's a bad battery. Maybe he just forgot to charge it in time. If you've got a simple phone that easily keeps power for a week or more, chances are you will forget about checking power every now and than. I know I did when I still owned a simple no-nonsense Siemens...

Or maybe he just had an Android phone and used (against all advice) a taskkiller that euhm... killed the alarm-task (yeah, epic failure. This would be the number 1 topic on most Android forums I guess).

In the end, we simply don't know why his alarm failed to wake him...
