"NEXT! .. Hey! Where's Miller?!"
Golf Channel Going Quiet On Saturday
By Kickntrue on 9/16/10
If there's every been a weekend to go golfing instead of sit inside to watch it, it's this weekend. The PGA Tour is off, as are the Champions and LPGA Tours. What were they thinking?! Still- what Golf Channel is doing Saturday with the Nationwide Tour is interesting.
After some discussion, we all got on board with what promises to be a fun broadcast of the Nationwide Tour’s Albertsons Boise Open that will be entertaining for the viewer in a non-traditional way. It won’t be completely announcer-less, more like announcer-lite. We’ll all be in the broadcast, we just won’t be talking about shots, players, or anything else while you’re watching the actual golf.

For the most part, the viewer will get to enjoy pure golf with all the audio coming from the players and caddies. Each player in the last four groups will have a dedicated boom-microphone (a big furry thing that can hear a gnat sneeze from a mile away) and no announcers will be able to interrupt while you’re listening to the good stuff. Also, a great deal of preparation is going in to providing the viewer with as much information as possible through the use of graphics – bio information and statistical information.
Wow... sounds like heaven. If it wasn't the Nationwide Tour I'd tune in just to check it out. May still be worth DVR'ing just to see what it'd be like. I have a sneaking suspicion it's going to go over really well- and is what viewers really want. Then... we're going to find out it's never going to happen again- because nobody really gives a crap about the customer.

i am skeptical, i like to hear discussions between players and caddies when we rarely get a chance to hear them but i also enjoy the stupid commentary, I like to play "thats what she said" when the announcers say something along the lines of "He really stuffed that in there" or "right down the pipe and hard" my wife will be on the computer and hear their comments and turn around and say what did he just say! HILARIOUS!

I remember many years ago, one of the networks did an NFL game with no play by play or commentary. I enjoyed it and as far as I know, they never did it again. I think what they are planning to do will be great. Every golfer in the last four groups will have a dedicated boom microphone on him. That should be very interesting. I wasn't planning to watch but now I'm setting the tivo to record it.

Hearing the player caddy stuff would be pretty neat.

Wow even with a good idea like this they manage to make it come off as totally pompous, self-serving and out of step. Screw them. Just do a good proper job of broadcasting and don't call too much attention to yourself. People seem to forget that TV is just a medium, its job is to deliver the actual content.
Pappybro says:
Not to worry - the commercials will be just as loud.

I used to watch Monday night football with the sound turned off (to mute that annoying John Madden) Then I'd find an AM radio station that had the game. It was an amazing experience, because the radio announcers had to paint a visual picture for the radio audience, and having the video in front of you made it that much more fun.
cjgiant says:
You definitely don't need sound to watch golf, as I have also muted quite a few rounds to listen to something else. However, to force the viewer into this I do not believe is a good move.

Having more access to the interplay between golfer and caddie (I am assuming Golf Channel is working a delay?) is great. But for it to be the only thing? Will the graphics make up for commentators giving "big picture" comments such as "he is two back, and sinking this 8 footer for birdie would be big", while not earth shattering, still provides useful information to viewers that the players/caddies may or may not be able to provide?

i'm craving golf so bad i'd watch Banker85 if someone was following him around this weekend with a boom mic & camera lol
psvaren says:
I seem to recall something like this before. I think it was a Champions Tour event last year (I think the Friday round), and there were no commentators. Just the sounds of the game and the conversations on the course. It was very enjoyable.
Banker85 says:
@coojfresh: LOL, why no golf for you?
666 Iron says:
I'm definitely checking this out.
Kickntrue says:
Wow! That sucked. They worked so hard to promote how awesome they were for going announcerless they managed to actually show LESS golf. Instead of the announcers analyzing they just blabbed on couches. Terrible. Show the freaking golf! That part was actually cool, though I felt like te players were distracted a bit and weren't acting like they normally do.
coojofresh says:
oh i'm playing @Banker85 but win it is dark outside i love watching golf on tv like i'm gonna re-watch the bosie open again later tonight lol.
