Meet The Worlds New #1 Golfer
By Kickntrue on 9/30/10
Phil Mickelson had plenty of chances to knock Tiger off his "World's #1" pedestal, but it will be Lee Westwood who will have that honor in a couple weeks. The beauty of the math- is that Westwood can do this even though he hasn't played in 2 months.
Westwood will have a chance to replace Woods atop the ranking at the Alfred Dunhill Championship next week at Scotland, with St. Andrews the host course. Westwood finished second at the British Open in July. He also is expected to play the Portugal Masters the following week.

If he were to finish in the top 20 at both events, that should be enough to reach No. 1 for the first time in his career.

Woods has been No. 1 for the last 277 weeks, dating to the week before the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst.
The formula for ranking golfers is more convoluted than the BCS and we would be up in arms about it... except Tiger hasn't left much doubt for the past 10 years, plus the small fact that it doesn't really matter.

Like you say, this "No. 1 golfer" label is a joke. What does "No. 1" even mean? The rating system is only minimally related to what has happened recently, or even the past 12 months, so it can't tell us anything about the current No. 1 player. It's not like we didn't know that cumulatively over the past 10-year period Woods has been the best. But again like you say, it's mostly irrelevant. And if the system is that slow to change the result, then once someone displaces Woods, it's hard to seee how they could lose the title soon.

Dude, put the crack pipe down and just say "No!" to drugs. This is probably Tiger's biggest slump and considering everything he's gone through in the last 10 months, the worst he's become is a "better than average" player on the PGA Tour. Think about that, he's playing his worst game ever and he's STILL better than average. With the divorce finalized and getting his groove back with Sean Foley, Tiger will dominate once again on tour with a fourth new swing. Unbelievable! The world had a year to dethrone Tiger from the top, but they weren't man enough to get it done.

Only fitting since this has been one of the dullest seasons in pro golf in recent memory.

Perhaps the statistical computation's answer may be that Lee Westwood is the #1 Golfer. However, not having a major championship on one's resume pretty much disqualifies a golfer from being considered #1 in my book.

If Tiger thought it was that important he could always enter some Fall Finish events. I'm sure they could squeeze him in.

Funny how if Tiger is #1, it's a good thing. Someone else takes the #1 spot it don't mean squat.
