Is Martin Kaymer A "True Gent?"
By Kickntrue on 11/30/10
Martin Kaymer was supposed to be play in Tiger's Chevron World Championship this weekend, but pulled out at the last minute... apparently to caddie for his girlfriend.
The PGA Champion chooses a caddying gig for his girlfriend over the Chevron World Challenge. A photo has even surfaced.

Naturally, the Euro writers are swooning. Matt Cooper writes:

The German could have spent this week chasing world ranking points at the Chevron World Challenge in California but, like a true gent, instead chose to support the aspirations of his girlfriend.
Golf Blogger Geoff Shackelford asks a good question though:
You think if a big name American withdrew from a European event at the last moment to caddy for his significant other he'd be called a true gent?
I think it's pretty fair to say he would not. Heck, if it was Tiger I'm pretty sure he'd be called words and names not yet invented.

The picture isn't good- but I may be on Kaymer's side though. He just made $7.5M in the past week- and his girlfriend appears to be smoking hot. Probably a good move by him- at least for the rest of his offseason to win points with her. Pretty hard to imagine a relationship lasting though where they're both traveling each week to different tour stops. Maybe he ought to start feeding her some bad yardages.

Who is the girlfriend? I can't decide which way to go, if she is smokin hot, I side with Martin, if she's average or worse I side with Geoff

First, Martin needs to do better on the scheduling. If he even had a hint she might be busy that week, do not commit to the Chevron. Backing out of anything always seems to me to be rude unless the excuse is a result of an unexpected event. He should have anticpated she was going to be playing that week.

The photos I have seen of Alison seem to support Martin's decision. I will carry her bag anywhere, anytime.

I think what Kaymer did was pretty cool.

However, I think if it had been a top-tier American who pulled out (no Tiger jokes) at the last minute, the Euro Tour wouldn't have been so understanding.

@mjaber: right, as if JD didn't pull out on a tournament or euhm... a lot. And he's still invited for tournaments on the European Tour!

...just google his girlfriend. His decision was a no-brainer.

She's pretty in a Sandy B kind of way, but I haven't seen any pictures that make her look "smokin hot". She's cute and looks very young, but Martin must really like her, cause just based on looks, I would have to pass on the caddie job for the Chevron

WHIPPED! She is hardly smoking. cute not hot. pretty not beautiful. you guys got some low standards. She is a 7 at the most. Kaymer is rich and young he could do whatever he wants.

@jev... I was referring to the media, rather than the tournament organizers or the folks in control of the Euro Tour. I should have clarified.

Not that the US media would be any better if the situation were reversed.

I think she's well above a 7...

At any rate, I'm down with Kaymer's choice. Maybe girlfriend points were more valuable than world ranking points this weekend?

For a St. Louis girl, she's an 11.

She's 'girl-next-door' hot, and i'm a big fan of that.

ericsmi says:
Doesn't matter if she's hot or not. If she asked, most guys who want to keep a girlfriend are going to do as she asks. It's not like it is a real tour event or that he needs the money. He'll have plenty of chances to gain world ranking points. He's still thinking golf, even if he's not playing.

Tour guys have something like 15 years to really make bank and create a legacy. Kaymer probably has 10 years to really do that. I'd focus on the career as the primary priority, but thats just me. I know some guys have had late career resurgances (Vijay, Phil, Boom Boom, Watson, Nicklaus) but why would a guy walk away from millions now, on the chance that he might have other oppurtunities when he's in his 40's and 50's?

You don't cancel attending a meeting in the last minute. Its not good for your company image. Must respect other people's time too.

jev says:
@mjaber: don't mix the US and GB media with European media please. Our local (as in: mainland Europe) golfmedia just mention it and put it to rest when one of the big name players (either US, EU or from anywhere else) decide to cancel at the last moment.

Anyway, it seems to me Kaymer recognizes there's more to life than just earning money and championship points. It seems the European top players all see it this way; isn't that why Westwood, Kaymer and McKilroy for example decided to not play the PGA next year but instead stay close to home?

MartijnL says:
@jev I think it could also be impacted by the increasing hassle that is connected to flying to/from the US.

@carv712 Come on, dude made bank already. Skipping the Chevron is not like skipping the US PGA or something.

mjaber says:
@jev... I did not know that. I will be sure separate GB from the Euro media in future discussions.

carv712 says:
@MartijnL True enough that the Chevron is not the PGA Championship, and Kaymer isn't Rory, but I'd like to know the odds of his winning the Chevron ($1.2 million) versus his odds of making things last with his girlfriend. This isn't a romcom starring Hugh Grant as Martin Kaymer - I just don't get skipping out on the oppurtunity to win 1.2 mil plus world ranking points to share a few movie worthy romantic moments in a relationship that may last less time than "Notting Hill" lasted in the theaters.
