Uh-Oh. Tiger May Still Be Good
By Kickntrue on 12/3/10
If you believe everything the golf media says- you'd maybe think you could go out and beat Tiger Woods these days. Um, no.
Under sunny skies and absent any wind, he shot an easy 65 to take the first-round lead of the unofficial, 18-player Chevron on Thursday, which is to say the most meaningless event of the season could wind up meaning a lot. The swing change he's been trying to groove under coach Sean Foley since August? Working.First- please know and understand I'm not flipping 180 degrees the other way... I don't think one round means Tiger is "back," but let's remember that for Tiger "back" is a completely unobtainable level by any other golfer in the world.
Tiger had an awful 2010... at home. His finishes on the golf course- against (pretty much) the 13 best fields of 2010 were as follows:
T4, Cut, W/D, T19, T4, T46, T23, T78, T28, T12, T11, T15, T6.
In the 4 majors he finished- 4th, 4th, 23rd, and 28th.
If you project his play out to a "normal PGA Tour pros" 26 events, even with no improvement he would've finished somewhere around 25th on the money list for the year. Of course winning 1 event, vaults you up about 10 places.
Will he win this weekend? I don't know. Beyonds a confidence boost I'm not sure how much it matters. He's really only playing against 17 other players (though they are the best in the world). I don't think winning this weekend should count towards world rankings (it does- and Tiger can be #1 again with a win), but I think I've made my point. The dude may NEVER be what he was, but he's going to be okay.

As an avid Tiger fan, it was fun to watch. Especially since he was chasing McDowell on the back 9 who was playing just as well. I hope he wins!
Forget that he's only playing 17 others...65 in the first round is abigger story if he stays around there the whole tourney and shoots like 17 under. Then he coulda beat as many other players as he likes.

I think pairing him with Stricker was good for T.
Steve always reminds me of the solid, wiser, middle-aged big brother.
Saw them play together last Prez cup n they did pretty good.
Go Tiger Go!
Rory got his wish of playing Tiger one on one....now he's getting his ass whooped! Ohh, how people forget..
@ayparekh - i'm not sure "ass whooped" is what i'd go with here. He's down 1 after 9.
my comment was a li'l premature...he was down 3 after 6 when i posted it...anyway, lets see how the day ends. cant wait to see it tonight on golf channel.
somebody's getting better! This is the Tiger we need. Suck on that Rory! 99% of the time Play like this would be leading any tournament no matter size or strength of field.

An interesting interview this month with (some call the best) golf announcer/analyst Brandel Chamblee www.golf.com/golf/tours_news/article/0,28136,203 . He was asked a few Q's about Tiger.
PS: Just putting up the link, they are not my words.
Very fine interview.
@mwfaith1971: Yeah, thanks for the link. Great interview.
If he leaves off on this note, the momentum for the start of next year is set.
haha! i guess Tiger will need to wait even longer for a win. Tiger won't be #1 again for a while.
He's still good, very good. But a few others are just a little better right now.
Three days of excellency, one day a little less. Not good enough yet, but he soon will be!
Not too shabby for tiger. I think he's putting fairly well with that new putter. seems to be rolling it quite good. The problem is still in his swing. he's not comfortable with it and it's not working well with his short game. He'll be back.
