Hawaii Looks Tough
Jonathan Byrd Leading FedExCup
By Kickntrue on 1/10/11
Jonathan Byrd won the 2011 season opening event in a playoff yesterday over Robert Garrigus. Garrigus assisted greatly by missing a 3 foot putt for par on the 2nd playoff hole.
Just over three months ago, Byrd thought he might lose his card for the first time in his career. He was outside the top 125 on the money list, and not much was going his way.

Then came a hole-in-one in near darkness to win Las Vegas in a playoff, getting him to Maui for the Tournament of Champions. He made it two straight wins by closing with a 6-under 67, and winning despite the length advantage for Garrigus in the playoff.

"I can't sit here and not think about where I was toward the end of the season last year, fighting for my card," he said. "I'm just thankful, I'm overwhelmed, I'm grateful, all of the above."
Garrigus, one of the nicest guys on Tour, was obviously disappointed too, but being one of the most honest guys assessed his situation as this, "It was a great week. I've lost about 133 golf tournaments, and it's not that big a deal. I get a nice check, and I get to go next week and relax and have fun."

I was going to be sad for Robert- but he makes a good point. $635,000 is still a decent paycheck for a long weekend of work.

Anyone see any of this? I tried to catch some of the early round play- but NFL playoffs won out. I didn't see a second of action Saturday or Sunday.

I watched the recording of it this morning (without knowing the results.) I think Garrigus held it together really well, he never hit one wayward drive or approach, which I think would usually break down first if one gets nervous.

And of course Garrigus was good too, but the long round finally caught up to him.

I watched all weekend, and Sunday was awesome. GMac was insane, and really gave himself a chance to win to win it. But Byrd was just too good and consistent to let anything go. I hope this is an example of things to come for Byrd. He has on of the sweetest swings on tour (imo).

ya they played some really good golf. Els was tearing it up on staurday. Jason Day is gonna win soon. he duffed his drive though it went about 125 yards, hit driver off the deck, out the sand and sank a 20footer for the what he said best par of his life. Garrigus is a good guy he was signing autographs while waiting to see if he was gonna be in a playoff, probably should have went to the putting green with the way he lost it on that 3 footer. Bubba smoked his second shot on 18 on sat. or fri. driver off the deck huge cut from 305 yards to make eagle. something like a 660yard par 5. crazy!
