Davis Love III US Ryder Cup Captain
By Kickntrue on 1/18/11
In news that has already been news but is now official news (got that?), Davis Love III has been named the US Ryder Cup Captain for 2012. Of course anyone who has cared to know has known this for quite some time. Heck- we did a story on it in the beginning of December and it was old news by then. Still- I suppose there is something to making it official (which technically it STILL won't be until Thursday).
Two officials involved with the selection process confirm Love will be the next U.S. captain. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement was not until Thursday at Medinah, where the 2012 matches will be played.

...

Love played on six Ryder Cup teams, winning the pivotal point at The Belfry in 1993. He played on only one other winning team, the great American comeback in 1999 at Brookline. His career record was 9-12-5.
I'm trying to decide where Ryder Cup Captain ranks in terms of uselessness to the actual success of a team. I think it has to be dead last, even beyond baseball manager. I honestly can't think they have much significance on the outcome of the event at all. Don't give me the line about reading players and seeing who plays well together. You could do that from your sofa having never met a single pro in your life. All the Ryder Cup Captain really has to do is show up at photo ops, do a couple interviews, pick proper rain gear (ZING!) and sneak in the after-hours strippers. I could so do that.

But good luck to Davis Love III.

... and make sure the players and their caddies are aware of the local rules ("Hey ... Dustin, sit up and listen, buddy!")

@bkuehn1952- Good point. Didn't think of local rules. That could make them more important than a baseball manager.

I guess the captains' picks can play a role too, in a tight year.

I really hate that the PGA of America passed on Larry Nelson. He would have been a great captain. Azinger did a great job, Pavin did fine as well - my preference would be someone a little more past their playing days. I fully expect 2014 will be Fred Couples.

bducharm... went to see the canes in Raleigh the other season against the Penguins in the Eastern Conference playoffs, quality.

Football (soccer) and hockey for watching and definitely golf for playing.

Back to the topic, Davis Love III or IX ain't going to help you lot next time either!
