Obama Plays 61st Round of Golf
By mustang6560 on 3/15/11
In President George W. Bush's first term in office, it wasn't uncommon to find him on the links from time to time. And any time he did, he would hear about it later from his opponents. But, in the last five years in office, "W" didn't play golf at all because he didn't think it was "commander in chief-ly".

Over the weekend, President Barack Obama completed his 61st round of golf since taking office in 2009 and he's taken some heat for it.
Meanwhile, ABC News, traveling with the president Saturday, in the pool, reported he hit the links for the second week in a row -- quote -- "Even as his administration and the U.S. military help Japan recover from a devastating earthquake... the president could not resist taking advantage of the 48-degree weather."

President Obama even joked with reporters Saturday night about his fondness for the sport saying -- quote -- "I'm not spending time on the golf course, I'm investing time in the golf course."
I don't understand why any president or congressmen should be chastised for playing golf, or tennis or whatever sport helps them decompress.

I understand there is a disaster in Japan and it's terrible. But does that mean the president shouldn't play golf? If the president wasn't allowed to "play" recreational sports during a "crisis", then he'd never be able to unwind because unfortunately in the world, there are crises happening every minute of every day. I for one, would rather my president, governor, senator, state legislator be given ample time to relax and relieve some stress. Golf is a much better alternative than having an extra marital affair with a woman in Argentina or a hooker in NYC.

Side note: Once someone said to me "why do big CEOs get paid that much when they're always playing golf or whatever away from the office". My response was "stress level. They have to make the calls that normal people wouldn't know how or even be comfortable making. They work hard when they work and they need to play just as hard to unwind or most likely they'll snap under pressure". A guy who was apparently a CFO of a company (to remain unnamed but pretty big) was sitting behind me and he says "FINALLY somebody gets it!" and invited me to golf. I had to say no because i was working. :( I was a little miffed though that he was eavesdropping.
Play on, Obama

NO problem here. Last i checked, he's the President of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA and not the President of Japan. Not to make light of their situation, but i'd like to echo the sentiment that if the President weren't allowed to play golf or whatever helps him decompress because of any natural disaster or horrific event in the world, then he'd be a frazzled shell of a man as they're always happening every minute of the day. Personally, i most certainly wouldn't want him running the country like that.

Agreed. Play on.

Doesn't bother me, but where does he find the time? He and I both have a wife and two children. I only work a 40 hour week and I can't get but a round or two a month in. He's played a lot more than me since 2009. I'm just jealous that he always has a foursome ready to go too. Maybe when I grow up I'll be the POTUSA.

How many of Obama's rounds (or a CEO's rounds, for that matter) do you suppose are strictly for pleasure? How many times per week do you suppose Obama (or a CEO, for that matter) works into the wee hours of the morning?

Seriously, I'm more inclined to wonder whether or not Obama follows ALL of the rules of golf. Or does he take a mulligan from time to time?

The name is Barack Obama. You ought to take the trouble to spell out his name properly, he's only the goddang POTUS.

Eisenhower played more golf than anybody.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone the time to relax. However, this country needs real leadership with unemployment the way it is, Congress hasn't passed a budget(should've been passed at the end of last fiscal year), gas prices going thru the roof, the Middle East is all but on fire, & a judge declared his Affordable Health Care Act unconstitutional and President Obama is sadly not providing it. I understand the similarities between the President and CEO's but a CEO is not the leader of the free world. Just my humble opinion. Wouldn't mind playing 18 with him though.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Obama is playing golf while the rest of the world is going down the tubes. But then again let him play golf. The longer he's on the course the less time he's in office screwing up our nation.

True but he has his czars to that while he's out of the office. Ugh.

He might have waited a week or two. At the very least, I hope the secret service got groups in front to let the POTUS play through, so he didn't have to put up with a 5 hour round like the rest of us poor slobs. I'm much more offended by the display of wealth (and apparent lack of concern) at the Tavistock cup. Wealthy pros getting flown in on helicopter to a beautiful private club with hole-in-one prizes like credit for private jet time and boats! (And occasional mentions by the announcers that *viewers* can donate money to the red cross for the Japan crisis.)

Anybody that has a problem with the president playing an occasional round of golf, or taking his kids on vacation, or taking the time to fill out an NCAA bracket is an a$$hole. I don't really like Obama or his politics and didn't vote for him, but this is just stupid. The notion that he shouldn't do these things based on the timing of a natural disaster, or a revolution in another country, etc.. because of how it looks to the public is also dumb. Get over yourself!

If you're unemployed, and are blaming Obama playing golf on your misery, that attitude is probably the reason you are unemployed. He is a human being with the same needs as any other... Recreation and decompression included.

I post a missive about extricating a vestigial, shriveled, unused portion of a past, morally absent state figurehead of a criminal cadre's cranium and I get the coals yet this obviously polar, ignorant, divisive, salty, poorly laundered, thread and contributors go unpunished?

grr... I'm beside yourself

Kurt the Knife says:
really. there are other places for political discourse. I like oob for its mostly apolitical, areilgious (dunno if thats a word..u know what I mean) golf focused and occasionally woman-objectifiying (oops) framework.
Someone posted before...always gonna be someone who holds an opposing moral/political/religious/gluten-free point of view. I pledge we keep oob free of these prickly topics and stay peaceful in the framework of our shared interest of ...

whacking a sphere around a huge expanse of grass, sand, trees and water for pleasure. or whatever one might derive from the enterprise.

From reading a lot about the Clinton administration I found that presidents are probably the most efficient people in the world with their time. They have a team of staff to make sure they are. I think it's pretty easy for him to schedule 5 hours a week where he's not having to deal with anything from the important column and go play some golf.

I'm with ya on that and agree KtK, you did get slayed pretty hard on that previous one - where do I sign the pledge?!

Nice use of words there - there is a requiste, attribulatory, confine 'strategery' in making up words... ;)
My business partner and I do it all the time!

Totally agree. Plenty of other places to be political. That was pretty much my point... I don't even like Obama, but damn if the POTUS doesn't deserve to relax once a week.
