GB&I Take Walker Cup
By Kickntrue on 9/12/11
The Walker Cup (think Ryder Cup for amateurs) was this weekend and for the first time since 2003, the trophy will stay across the pond. Great Britain & Ireland used home course advantage as well as favorable conditions (meaning terrible weather) to beat a USA squad filled with promise and hope 14-12.
The hosts needed 13 1/2 points to win the title and took an insurmountable lead after 17-year-old Welshman Rhys Pugh won his singles match against U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft 2 and 1 and Steven Brown halved with Blayne Barber.

Paul Cutler than halved with American Patrick Cantlay in the final match of the biennial event between leading amateur players.

"I'm proud of all the boys," Britain & Ireland captain Nigel Edwards said. "They've all played their part in beating what is a very good American team."
A couple thoughts... The American team really does have some hope for the future of USA golf. Usually with the Walker Cup team an avid golf fan may know 1 or 2 of the players, but the USA squad has a couple very recognizable faces including Peter Uihlein, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay. Talent abounds.

Second, I think this event is something we'd like to watch or care a little about, but what an awful weekend for it. I realize there is always "something" but to put it up against the NFL's opening weekend is basically asking for nobody to watch or even know about it. Sure- I'm more out of the loop than I should be, but I didn't even know the event happened until this morning when scanning golf news for stories to blog about. It has to be able to create more buzz than that.

Anyway- the we'll get'em next time! I'm sure of that, but until then, congrats to the boys from GB&I.

And this- while unrelated- needed to be posted somewhere. Since this article is about Team USA, this is as close a chance as I'll get. I'm not going to post anything about 9/11 because frankly I could never say anything that others haven't said, but this rendition of the National Anthem from yesterday's Bears vs. Falcons game was AMAZING. Screw pop stars- and long drawn out versions of the song. Just sing the thing- and I LOVE the fans cheering straight through it. All anthems should be sung this way! After all- it's an anthem, not a processional.

(singing starts at 1:05)

Best one i've heard in a long time. Absolutely outstanding. a little long at the end for my taste still but that's totally what it should sound like.

The guy who did the National Anthem does them for all of the Chicago Blackhawks games, and he did them in the playoff for the Bears last year. The one he did against the Seahawks last year was even better than yesterday.

Awesome. And I'm English.

This guy was seriously pumped up. Nate you make a good point about the pop stars and their histrionics, who needs it.
