PowerPlay Golf Tournament Adds 2nd Pin
By mustang6560 on 4/14/11
PowerPlay golf promises to change golf forever.
Hoping to change the face of a sport often considered to be staid and boring, organizers of the three-event series are looking to bring in new fans by offering a faster pace and more excitement with two pins per green and only nine holes in a round.

"Stand by for something very special," Scotland's Colin Montgomerie said in a statement Wednesday. "Golf around the world is about to discover a new dimension."
I think they are over-selling this event. On paper it sounds cool. But I just don't think having Graeme McDowell and Paula Creamer along with a few other well known golfers playing golf with slightly different rules is going to increase interest in the game of golf. To me, this seems like a ploy to get more non-golfers interested in the sport and I don't think it is going to work.

As much as people like to complain about the pace of play on golf courses, at the end of the day I think too many golfers would find having two pins per green would violate the traditions of golf. It's just like the argument in soccer to widen the goals. Only the non-soccer fans want to change the size of the goal, not the true fans.

Having two pins per green will only speed up pace slightly because the time saved by doubling the options will be lost in the fairway as the golfer decides "Do I play for the short pin or go for the hard pin for more points?" Bringing in extra strategy will force players to think longer on their approach shots.

It sounds like a fun idea, but I don't think it's going to accomplish what its creators intended.

Per the rules, you have to declare if you're going for the "power play" flag prior to teeing off.

As if the average slow, lumbering golfer hacking away at the local muni needs to be faced with another decision. And as if the greens need to spread out the unrepaired ball marks. Meh.

it would be fun to try the two pin thingy on a weekday afternoon but no extra rules, just the extra pin..

just get rid of calling out which pin you're going for and I don't think it would be that bad. especially for the hack who can't judge distance or know if the ball will go left or right. just aim for the center of the green and putt at the one closest to you.

double weak sauce. dumb idea. nice try. thank you come again. you are the weakest link. the tribe has spoken. Please pack up your knives and go. Your work of art, didn't work for me. You're times up. I have to ask you to leave the mansion. You must leave the chateau. Your tour ends here. You've been chopped! You've been evicted from the Big Brother house. Your desert just didn't measure up. Sashay away! Give me your jacket and leave Hell's kitchen! You did not get a rose. You have been eliminated from the race. You are no longer in the running to be America's Next Top Model. You're fired. Auf Wiedersehen.
