Tiger Woods Should Start Playing Bubba Ball
By mustang6560 on 5/5/11
Bubba ball (noun), definition: (1) playing golf without the input of a swing coach and sports psychologist (2) bombing your drive off the tee (3) playing without fear. Sentence Great shot over the water, good sir. Thanks, chap. I'm really playing some Bubba ball today!

Bubba Watson, the originator of "Bubba Ball" developed this style of golf from the advice his father gave him growing up.
"My dad taught me to be a leader or a follower, and he said follower ain’t fun," Watson said. "So I want to be the leader of Bubba Watson. What I say goes. ... When we were kids growing up, you went out there and you dreamed about shots. We always talk about we had this putt to win from ten feet, let’s make it. Then when you miss it, you’re like, okay, no, wait, we’re going to have this over, we’re going to do this ten-footer again. So you’re out there dreaming what you want to do in your life, what you want to achieve.
Part of Bubba's success on the golf course is not worrying too much about the mental aspect of the game. He admitted he thought Tiger Woods is being too mental right now, that's why his game isn't back to form yet.
"Yeah, I’ll just go ahead and say it: I think Tiger is going the wrong way," Watson said. "I think he’s so mental right now with his swing. Just go out there and play golf. He used to hit shots, used to bomb it, used to do all that stuff. In 2000 and ’97 I think he did pretty good. He won the Masters by 48 shots or whatever he won it by.

"But I think sometimes he gets carried away on that. And a lot of guys do. The mental part of it, I get carried away sometimes. I think I’m not very good. I complain to Teddy all the time how bad I am at golf. He’s like, shut up.
I wish I could say I play a version of Bubba ball. But the fact of the matter is I don't have the distance or the ability to work the ball in so many directions.

But, the one thing I can do to incorporate Bubba ball to my game is swing without so much reservation. I often will talk myself out of taking a risky shot because of the little devil on my shoulder saying "What if you miss it?" Not any more little devil man, I will play without fear of failure on the course from now on (at least I'll try).

nothing wrong with a man crush... If you're a GIRL! zing! too easy!

anyways ya i think it would do Tiger a ton of good if he started to do things on his own. he should really take a page outta the Bubba Ball manual, I mean not like it would hurt. He has been winless too long and to continue to say its a work in progress is getting old. Obviously the work aint workin. You dont win 14 majors with swing coaches you win with the god given talent you were born with. Even Jack said he never had swing coaches or made swing changes he just played with what worked. It would do everyone good if they stopped focusing on the technacalities of the swing and just play.

@RyanJ- Every time I try to hit my drive off the deck, it doesn't quite work out so well.

I spray my drives, and usually I can play off the next fairway, but some courses you just can't miss fairways. Just relaxing, and not swinging on the tee has helped me a lot when i just need to hit a fairway, and I still get pretty good distance really.

Going for it is cool, but if you muff it 50 yards, or slice it in the water, you have to think is Bubba ball good for those who dont have the tools in the bag.

You've gotta have a go. I mean, we amateurs aren't playing for big money so why shouldn't we take on a risky shot :-) Bubba has a lot riding on a round (his living) and still goes for it - gotta like that. Probably why Tiger was so great a few years back, he went for it. I agree with course management, but when you try; and fail; and end up with a no-shot, why not try something like bend it around a tree. Worst case: you hit it out of bounds so you drop and play another. Best case: you end up on the green and you have a great story on the 19th :-)
