Bubba Watson: Next Great American Golfer
By mustang6560 on 5/18/11
Tiger Woods is no longer Tiger Woods. Nos 1-3 in the Official World Golf Ranking are Europeans. All four major titles are currently held by non-Americans. Europe won the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales. We all know the storyline.
American golf needs a new poster boy and many people are looking at my boy Bubba Watson to lead the rally cries. But, if you ask Bubba, he doesn't want to be the new face of American golf.
"I do have a pretty face," he joked in an interview with The Associated Press. "But I hope the Tour is not going to bank on me being their poster child. I think it's going to be harder to dominate, like we used to see, like Tiger has dominated for so many years. I think it's going to be harder to have one guy stand out like that, because the talent is so much deeper in each tournament that it's harder to dominate the whole world like that."Like Bubba has a say in this matter. If he keeps winning, the media will crown him king of American golf regardless of how he feels about it.
As much as I like Bubba, I think it's too soon to be talking about him as the poster boy of American golf. Maybe after he wins his first major we can have this discussion. He's won three times in the last year and lost in a playoff to Martin Kaymer at the 2010 PGA Championship, so clearly he's got the talent. But there is a ton of other up and coming young talent including Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Steve Marino, etc to be casting Bubba already in the role of the new face of American golf.
The poster boy of American golf should be Phil Mickelson. He's the most decorated American golfer right now, but the problem with Phil is he's so unreliable. So in my opinion, American golf is going to have to play the "youth" card until someone steps up and decides they want to be the face of American golf.

needs to get rid of the pink shafts, mini mullet, and visor and I'm in.
BUBBA!!! Yes! Though, I like Dustin a lot, I think he's still got a long way to go to dominate. Fowler? That kid has talent.
Bubba is cool! Funky swing, huge hitter, no swing coach, tells it like it is, fun to watch, great attitude/demeanor on the course, and carries his emotions on his sleeve...sounds like the face of American golf to me! He also seems like a normal guy that you'd want to hang out with, too. I also like the fact that he seems very down to earth and does things his own way, and takes full responsibility for the results. I think the pink driver shaft is funny, and I'd like to see him play a pink ball, too....not much his competitors could say to him, as he flies his drive 50 yards past theirs!!
Kurt the Knife says:
I have my fingers crossed every week for Fowler, but I haven't seen him do much of anything. Dustin as least does something now and then. I think its a good competitive tour right now, and hopefully the US has a crew that steps up, and I hope they're all going to, but not sure if Fowler or Johnson have done enough yet. Phil and Bubba are solid, Watney has potential too, just has to pull the trigger when it counts.
Interesting though, Tiger and Singh were always battling, but everyone makes it sounds like Tiger was playing by himself, I think he was just amazing, don't be knocking the other golfers he played with... I think if tiger wasn't there, others would have been battling, its like playing high school vs college... but i think everyone gives tiger too little credit, and maybe the golf world didn't have a 10 year stretch of weak pros.
Maybe i'm crazy.
But i admit, I'm digging the Pink stick now. Damn that sounds dirty.
I support Bubba. Still a little wrong, but there you go.
Fowler doubled for 29 today LOL... so he's 7 under, maybe he heard me.
everyweek Yahoo has Fowler on their headline after Thursdays round andthen hes gone till next Thursday... he will get it together eventually, maybe... I like Bubba, pink shaft nutty hair visor and all...
