Luke Donald Ranked Inside Top 10 in Cross-Sport Power Rankings

We know Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have cross-sport appeal among sports fans.
But you know who is making a name for himself at a dinner table near you? Luke Donald. In this week's Cross-Sport Power Rankings on ESPN.com, the Englishman is ranked No. 6, a very high mark considering the athletes ahead of him on the list are arguably the best in their respective sport. Lionel Messi (best soccer player ever) topped the list followed by LeBron James (best basketball player ever), Dirk Nowitzki (#4, best German basketball player/7-foot scorer ever) and Novak Djokovic (best young tennis player).
Donald missed out on a chance to become the world No. 1 golfer last week. But he didn't let another opportunity slip away. His birdie Sunday on the first playoff hole sealed the BMW PGA Championship win and the top spot in the world rankings. Cheerio! The title of "number 1 golfer in the world" may not carry the same significance to golf fans ever since Tiger Woods relinquished control late last year. But apparently it matters to the average sports fan. Luke's recent rise to the top of golf's ranking was an overnight boost to his career.
And good for Luke - he's earned it. He's off to a solid start this year. He's won twice so far, once on the PGA Tour and just last week on the European Tour and he was in contention at the Masters in April until the final few holes. If he keeps this up, who knows, he may capture his first major of his career in 2011.
