List of Rory McIlroy's U.S. Open Records
By mustang6560 on 6/20/11
Rory McIlroy set multiple records with his win on Sunday at the U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club. First, I heard he set 12 new records. Then, I heard it was 15.

I did my best to search for all of the records Rory set, and by my count it's 12. If you know of any I missed, let me know and I'll add it to my list.

Rory McIlroy's Records at the U.S. Open
  1. The 72-hole record at 268.

  2. McIlroy's 16-under is the most strokes under-par for 72 holes in U.S. Open history.

  3. The 54-hole record at 199.

  4. The 36-hole record at 131.

  5. McIlroy is the first player in U.S. Open history to reach 13-under-par.

  6. McIlroy is the first player in U.S. Open history to reach 14-under-par.

  7. McIlroy is the first player in U.S. Open history to reach 15-under-par.

  8. McIlroy is the first player in U.S. Open history to reach 16-under-par.

  9. McIlroy is the first player in U.S. Open history to reach 17-under-par.

  10. Quickest to reach double digits under par -- 26 holes when he got to 10 under in the second round.

  11. McIlroy is the first player in U.S. Open history to get to double-digits under-par in the first two rounds.

  12. McIlroy hit 62 of 72 greens — an astounding 86%, which is a record for as long as the USGA has been keeping them.

He is also one of only a handful of players to be under par for all 4 rounds.

I was trying to list unique stats. He wasn't the first to shoot all four rounds in the 60s.

i get he set records but the first to -13, -14, -15 and so on seems a bit redundany to me. But still an amazing accomplishment. Now i hope he realizes he needs to play in the USA on the PGA tour were he will become a Superstar!

Great golf, Rory! I was struck by how many European players were holding the top of the leader board. Rory: The new and improved Tiger.

I think, looking at where the Europeans are finishing in the majors, that the European tour might becoming a stronger tour than the PGA tour.

@Banker85- Did you watch the trophy presentation? Bob Costas asked him now that he won the US Open if he was going to play on the PGA Tour more and he said "I might have to".

Missed an easy one. Youngest player to ever win a US Open. 22 yrs 1 month where as Jack Nicklaus was 22 yrs 4 months (think thats what they said on TV last night)

Backquak says:
I thought they said he was the youngest in the last 80 years, but I think there was a teenage kid that won it as the youngest, and they made a movie about it, weird name. Or was that a different major?

Backquak says:
Here it is from wikipedia:
Youngest champion: John McDermott in 1911 at 19 years, 315 days.

Bobby Jones was also younger

Not sure if it's a record or not, but the way he dismantled the par 4's was rediculous! If I remember corectly, he was like -11 on them for the week! Of course, longer hitters tear up the par 5's, but he actually played the par 4's better--which speaks of the tremendous talent he has!

Dazinkster says:
Ah, my bad Backquak. The UK commentary either glossed over those guys or just didn't mention them entirely (wonder why?, lol). On a side note, I wonder when the last time was that no US guy held any of the majors? It's been 5 Euro/South African wins on the bounce now, lots of international talent around atm
