Yani Tseng Wins LPGA Championship
By mustang6560 on 6/27/11
With her fourth career major title in the bag, Yani Tseng is now officially the face of the LPGA.

Or so I'm told.

Tseng, who is the number female golfer in the world, won the LPGA Championship Sunday by an impressive 10 strokes. Her dominating performance at Locust Hill Country Club mimicked what Rory McIlroy was able to do a week ago in the U.S. Open at Congressional.
"It is very special," she said. "But really, I just want to focus on every tournament. I'll still go and try to win the next major."
The LPGA needs a player for fans to root for and root against. Example, Tiger Woods. He is good for the PGA Tour because whether or not you like him personally, fans root for him. Some root for him to fall on his face and others root for him to win so he can pass Jack Nicklaus to officially cement his place as the best player ever.

Like it or not, the LPGA struggles to attract fans and sponsors. If Tseng can continue to win, I definitely think she will help attract much needed attention to the LPGA, which could potentially attract more sponsors - a.k.a. more money! And more money for the LPGA is most definitely a good thing.

At 22-years-old, she already has won more majors than Anika Sorenstam and Tiger Woods did at that age. We could be watching the future best female golfer of all time. But, just like with Rory, we shouldn't rush to any judgment. We should just appreciate Tseng's performance for what it was and let life play out on the course.

Is there a feminine picture of her? I don't have anything against the girls dressing like the boys but when they look like a guy and they are beating the rest of the girls, there are going to be questions. She should doll up a bit... or at least try.

Terrible but true. She is not marketable. You have to have looks (Paula Creamer) or personality (Lee Trevino) along with the wins... The American fan doesn't connect with her, thus hard to bring in fans.

Wow what a bunch of buffoons. If you don't care about women's golf then you should just save it rather than out yourselves with idiotic remarks. You don't even seem to realize the irony of all this buffoonery. Complaining that the top women golfers are not attractive enough for you? come on how queer and frivolous can you get. I was going to mention the finer points of Yani Tseng's exceptional golf game but clearly that would be lost on you ppl.

I for one, give a lot of credit to Tseng. A couple years ago she barely spoke English, but she has worked very hard and now does interviews without a translator. She actually has a nice personality and really tries to connect with the American fans. She'll never be confused with Paula C. in the looks department, but she seems to be great for the LPGA in my mind. Plus, she kills the ball for a female of her smallish stature. Kind of like Rory that way.

legitimatebeef: The irony is that you play (solely it seems) at a golf course named "Dyker"! hahahaha.
Also, I'm sure Tseng will be happy to read that you are defending her. You are a true gentleman.

I was thinking the same thing beef. Although the AK reference... ah nevermind. She is a great golfer. Paula looked hot this weekend.

It says a lot when her nearest competitor, Morgan Pressel (no slouch on the course) finished ten shots back. And @LegitimateBeef is spot-on -- it is human nature for a person to criticize something they either don't understand or don't want to understand. I'd be grateful to spend an hour learning short-game strategies and techniques from any woman who made the cut at the LPGA Championship; they'd probably help me cut three or four from my handicap / shot index.

I'm sure there are members of this site that didn't know who Yani Tseng was before reading this or hearing about her win recently. Unfortunately we still live in a sexist society, as men we will always look at women in a sexual manner first, then everything else second. There is no doubt that Tseng is going to dominate the tour, but she won't give us any "extra" incentive to watch. You can obviously see that some of the ladies are dolling themselves up, it's just that some are trying harder than others. I personally don't think there is anything they can do to get more viewers or sponsors,Michelle Wie would have certainly gotten more people to watch but that hasn't worked out. My thought is if Paula Creamer was winning as much as Tseng, the rating may be a little higher but not by much. There are people that watch because they like to watch, the LPGA doesn't have anyone or any reason to get viewers that don't play golf to watch the way that Tiger does.

Actually, I find the LPGA more exciting than the men's tour. Like Wie hitting a 530 yd green in 2? Amazing. I've been following the girls when they are televised. You really must watch Tseng putt. Like a tomahawk missile.

ToddRobb says:
@Kurt More exciting is bit of a stretch don't you think? I watch golf whenever it is on, no matter who is playing, one thing I have never thought about the ladies tour is "exciting". Their putting as a whole is at a much lower level, they miss many more short putts than they should. I would think they would be just as good at putting as the men, but they aren't.

Backquak says:
@Todd you are spot on, their putting should be as good as the guys, I watched because their swings were so much better than the men but in recent years the men have stepped up, the new guys have nice swings, something we can try to mimick so I have gotten more into the mens tour and stopped watching the ladies.

@Kickntrue has already recommended "Swinging from My Heels: Confessions of an LPGA Star," written by Christina Kim with Alan Shipnuck and published last year. It really is an excellent book and would help many guys understand more about the women playing the tour. Rick Reilly gave it some high (and politically-incorrect) praise when he wrote, "Christina Kim is more fun than a drunk puppy. Read this book before someone makes a movie out of her crazy life."

Kurt the Knife says:
Nope. no stretch from my POV.
