Robert Garrigus: Yes, I Inhaled
By mustang6560 on 6/30/11
Robert Garrigus recently admitted to smoking pot while he played on the Nationwide Tour.
"Oh yeah, there were plenty of guys on the Nationwide Tour who smoked in the middle of the round," Garrigus said.

"We always talked about it. You could go in the Porta John and take your drags."
In his interview with Dave Shedloski, Garrigus said life was simple back in the day.
"It was all golf and partying," he said. "I never did hard drugs. I never did coke or LSD. It was just smoking and drinking and hanging out with friends.

"The smoking got to be habitual: five, 10, maybe 20 times a day. I didn't keep track of how much. I constantly needed to be high. And I took it to the max. Every single day. Mostly just smoking, smoking, smoking."
There's 24 hours in a day and it's recommended to sleep an average of eight hours a day, which leaves roughly 16 waking hours. So, add the first two numbers, carry the six...Garrigus smoked an average of every 48 minutes back in the day. Holy smokes that's a ton of pot!

I'm confused here a little. Is the moral of this story that in order to make it through the Nationwide Tour you have to smoke pot? I know it's the PGA Tour's developmental tour, but it can't be all that bad. The winner's cut on the Nationwide Tour is around $100k these days. Maybe the moral of the story is pot almost cost Garrigus his shot on the PGA Tour?

Before now, you might know Garrigus as the guy with the really short putter. But, chances are know you'll know him as the guy who admitted to smoking the ganga. Either way, know this - the man's got game. He finished T3 at the U.S. Open at Congressional, which earned him a spot at the PGA Championship next month and a spot at The Masters and U.S. Open at Olympic Club.

I assume there is not drug testing on the Nationwide Tour.

seems like every hit would have a faint taste of that blue oil stuff in the bottom of the crapper. I try not to even breath when I'm in one of thoes things much less put something up to my lips.

@bobhooe -- true that. Ughh. the smell permeates the clothing - at least when they're fresh. After a day or so of golf tournament, i don't even want to use them. haha.

Also, i couldn't imagine smoking that much pot. I mean, he would literally be high all day. ALL DAY. every 48 minutes is like --- i couldn't even imagine. How did he have any money left? I knew guys in college that would smoke 3 times a day and thought that was a lot. They never drove or went anywhere that they could do damage though. I'm a NORML kinda guy, but Garrigus seems to have been taking it a little too far there.

I've mentioned this before, but a friend of mine swears up and down that he saw Phil smoking behind one of the tents "backstage" at the International tourney in Colorado. This was many, many years ago, but now whenever I see him give a presser with bloodshot eyes, I think, Hmm... I still don't believe him but he swears he witnessed this first hand.

I think everyone talking about doing drugs in the past tense exaggerates usage a bit. It's a badge of honor to some degree, always followed up with, "but you know, that was back in the day..." I'm guessing it wasn't quite as often as he says, but I don't doubt what he's saying is true. Single and on the road together 20somethings. In a new town every weekend. Yah- I'm guessing some recreational drug use was pretty common. I could see a little weed helping the golf game (not every 48 minutes though).

The Phil Mickelson rumor has been floating around for a while. It would be great if it were true.

I notice that Shedloski really plays up the pot-smoking aspect of the story while almost completely glossing over Garrigus's drinking. Maybe the pot really was the bigger problem but I suspect that they are trying to add some sizzle to the story by playing up the "illicit" substance use.

my ummm friend, ya friend, would smoke pot all day basically like how garrigus said, every hour smoke a bowl. it can be done. if you smoke constantly everyday for a couple years you just feel normal after smoking its not like it gets you all messed up just lazy. i smoked on the course once and shanked every shot after that totally ruined my round and my high.

I couldn't take it but a few times. Started to feel my hair growing. Then hungry but my stomach felt full. Then just felt stupid. Kinda like ya feel at an "Air Supply" concert.

Had friends who completely crocheted their asses into the sofa cushions and never matured beyond a 20 y/o mentality.

I can not focus if I smoked like that. Tried it a couple times and realized if I want to play well, this is not the way to go. Same for alcohol. I need to be focused and entergetic, not glossy eyed and lazy. Damn I miss being crocheted to the couch in my early 20's.

he's probably going to get his ass kicked for ruining it for the "plenty of guys on the Nationwide Tour who smoked in the middle of the round". Man I miss blowing down and playing some Golden Eye on the Nintendo 64 with my jobless friends.

There is no way he was smoking like that while playing competetively. The pro-ams, maybe, but I can't see it during practice rounds either. I think this story no doubt carrys a bit of the exageration you see from the reformed. Of course the best thing about being on the wagon is falling off...

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

eh, a couple of quick hits can really help you relax and stop stressing over your last few bad shots. i could see him doing it during the middle of a round.

birdieXris says:
So the bigger story is not that he smoked, but that he implicated others in it. But without implicating specific people. Ughh. with all the good he's trying to do coming forward and talking to people, the spin is going to screw this up for everyone.

srogers13 says:
They interviewed the guy who interviewed him on Morning Drive this morning. He said Garrigus told him some names off the record, and those guys are no longer involved on any of the tours. The time frame he was talking about doing this was around 2002.
