Lexi Thompson Leads Q-School
By mustang6560 on 7/28/11
The fourth and final major of the year on the LPGA Tour is under way at Carnoustie Golf Club. Meena Lee opened with a 7-under 65 and is the clubhouse leader after round one ahead of American Brittany Lincicome by two strokes.

While the field at the RICOH Women's British Open includes the likes of Yani Tseng, Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer, it is missing one of the biggest names in women's golf.

Lexi Thompson.

Instead of competing in Women's British Open, the 16-year-old phenom is in Daytona Beach, Florida trying to earn her LPGA Tour card at Q-School after she received a special exemption from the LPGA commissioner. And boy is she making the most of her opportunity. Lexi fired back to back 66s and holds the 36-hole lead by three-strokes over Mitsuki Katahira at the LPGA International.

I am definitely torn on this one. While I think it's amazing a 16-year-old has the talent to compete at the highest level, I think a minimum age limit is a good thing. Look at the NFL and NBA. The NFL requires its players be at least three years removed from high school before they can enter the draft and the NBA requires one year. I think both professional organizations have benefited by of this rule because it gives the players more time to mature.

Alas, it's not my decision to worry about so I'll simply applaud Lexi for her outstanding play. If she keeps this up, she'll most definitely make it to the second stage of Q-School qualifying.

NBA bowed under pressure so kids will not skip straight to the pros and play some college. The NFL is a physical thing... Golf is not a team sport, same as tennis and not a major college money maker.

Apples and Oranges...

I agree with TeT. Most guys fresh out of high school would get absolutely crushed in the NFL.

I think it is a geographical learned view on professional sportsperson ages. Over here in Europe it isn't an issue. Wayne Rooney's debut for Man Utd was at 15 years and Lionel Messi left Argentina to join Barcelona at 13... admittedly with family in tow... good look to her, life's too short...

Yup, good luck to her. However, i fear another messed up female teenage athlete is born.

is the women's british open streaming online?

The difference between NFL, NBA, NHL is the physicality. A 16 year old kid cant physically take a hit from James Harrison. Golf is more of a speed/ finesse sport. If she has the appropriate amount of both, there is no reason not to play. Play with the best to be the best.
Happy - I'm just here to make money.
Chubbs - Spoken like a try @55hole.

Plus, it would seem female golfers (Sorenstam, Ochoa) only have a limited career window before their bio-clocks hit overdrive and make them retire early to start making babies.
