Callaway Recalls uPro MX
By mustang6560 on 8/2/11
FULL DISCLOSURE, oobgolf is owned by SkyGolf, makers of SkyCaddie, the #1 Rangefinder in Golf!

Callaway issued a voluntary recall for its second generation GPS device, the uPro MX.
According to Tim Buckman, Callaway Golf senior director of global communications, the device's "technical challenges" centered on two main issues: 1) problems with the device's website in registering users and downloading course maps; 2) on-course usage glitches that included unexpected freezing or powering down. A recent review by Golfsmith customers gave the uPro MX device a 1 1/2 star rating on a 5-star scale.
Satisfied customers who purchased the uPro MX can keep their device and Callaway will still offer support via callawayuxplore.com. But, unhappy customers can visit callawayrefund.com to find out more information about how to receive a refund or gift card for their purchase. The offer is valid through September 30.

I saw a few people posted in the forums regarding the uPro MX. You know how we feel about golf GPS (SkyCaddie is the best for a reason), but we want to hear what you think about the recall and golf GPS?

Well I want to use my oobgolf iphone app but because it continually uploads to the server during a round, as well as the gps feature, it sucks the battery on my phone so I can't complete a round.

I got one n figgered it out OK. Even used it for a round. If/When u get it running, its kinda slick. The hole flyover thing is pretty cool and the integrated scorecard is nice but doesn't track enough stats for my liking. But the initialization/registration process is not for the weak. Gotta go digging around in the OS to locate drivers n such.
Was Obvious this was a MAJOR fuggup by Callaway and has severely tarnished their image IMHO.
Really, I can't believe this product was released in the state its in.
I'm debating whether I want to cash mine in or not.

I love the oob app but the accuracy of the GPS in my iphone gizmotron lags a lot.

Envythepea says:
@Kurt - Yeah, I noticed it was about 5 yards off. Do you have the iphone 4? I understand the battery life is much improved over the 3gs.

Kurt the Knife says:
Yep, on the iphone4. battery power lasts beyond a full round for me.
Again, my swing is so random at this point super accuracy is secondary. I am just hoping to develop an intuitive sense of distance over time.

The biggest thing I've noticed with the iPhone battery life (I've had 3g, and 4 now) is where you have your screen brightness set. Full sure looks impressive, but you can still very easily see the screen at 1/2 brightness and the increase in battery life is about double.

do ya think it might be possible for the devs to make the overview image align "track up"? on the oob app?
kinda weird when I'm playing southbound holes.

I'll try it with adjusting the screen brightness. Thanks, Kickntrue. I want to take advantage of posting my score realtime in a round but have not been able to yet. Once for a nine-hole only.

I bought the Upromx and it was simply a bad product. Touchscreen was terrible, device locked up on a regular basis, battery life was atrocious, unit was too small for people with regular size hands etc. I returned it a couple of weeks ago to Golftown and received a full refund. Callaway is doing the right thing by pulling this product, leaving it out there would do them more harm than good.

I don't have battery issueswith my DroidX running the oob app. I just make it sleep between uses. Looks like I could get at least 2 rounds out of it that way.

Cheaters! :) I love having to judge a shot based upon course markers or simply eyeing the distance. Makes a beautiful shot that much more meaningful.

Kickntrue says:
@KtK- Google Maps rules say we can't make them always point north. Anyone doing that is breaking the rules (or paying a buttload for the licence).
