PGA Tour Avoids Woods-Williams Pairing
By mustang6560 on 8/2/11
The pairings for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational were officially announced. And the ultimate pairing - Tiger Woods and Steve Williams, excuse me, I meant Adam Scott - will have to wait until (fingers crossed) the weekend. Tiger Woods is paired with good friend Darren Clarke and Adam Scott will play alongside Dustin Johnson for round one.

Does anyone else get the sense there was some backdoor posturing? I mean, if the PGA Tour and the folks at Firestone really wanted to create the best "featuring groupings", they would have paired Tiger Woods with Adam Scott for obvious reasons. Even a pairing with Rory McIlroy would have been fun to see as the U.S. Open champ is the "next Tiger Woods".

Jason Sobel wrote the Tiger-Darren pairing reeks of a "wink-wink, nod-nod" agreement behind closed, which assured Team Tiger a favorable playing partner as a symbolic "thank you" for making his return at Firestone.

I don't fault the WGC Bridgestone Invitational tournament officials completely. I understand why they would want to symbolically thank Tiger for scheduling his return a week before the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. Without him, the general interest of the tournament would not be as high. But if anyone questioned how much influence Tiger has over the game, please use Tiger's pairing for round one as an example.

that woulda been awesome! oh well we know we will see it sooner or later. talk about hositle work environments that would have been awkward. Like seeing your ex at a restaurant with your new flame.

Frankly, it would not have been fair to Adam Scott either, so I give them a pass for Round 1. But if they start fooling around with subsequent round pairings just to please TW, then it's time to call BS.

Tiger gets enough undue coverage as it is. The last thing I would want is the extra "drama" of his recently fired caddy on his playing partner's bag.

The first day pairings are solely for the fans and the ratings, unless you enjoy seeing people that are uncomfortable being around each other, I don't think the masses would want to see Tiger with Adam and Stevie.

Tiger dealt with this drama when he fired Fluff years ago. Didn't bother him then, won't bother him now. It's strictly business and shouldn't and won't be personal.

"the Tiger-Darren pairing wreaks of a "wink-wink, nod-nod" agreement"
Its reeks, not wreaks. You should probably hire a better proof-reader......:-)

This is a non-story. There are 50 people in the event, and 25 pairings. Why would there have to be a "wink-wink" agreement? In theory (randomly) there would only be a 4% chance of them playing together. I realize it's not random, but Adam Scott isn't exactly blowing up the world and neither is Tiger. Outside of forced drama, I don't see why that pair would be any more interesting than anyone else Tiger could get paired with.

@kick - I agree...but you know mustang, gotta keep Tigers name on the site!

What's with Tiger's new golf shoes? Looks like he's wearing slippers. Now that's drama.
