Stricker Flirts With Record 62
By mustang6560 on 8/11/11
Steve Stricker nearly made major tournament history today in the first round of the 93rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

The Wisconsin native fired an opening round bogey-free 7-under par 63, which ties the record for the lowest opening round at a major tournament. Steve is the sixth player in the last 10 years to shoot a 63 in the first round of a major. The other five include:
  • Rory McIlroy, '10 British Open at St. Andrews

  • Tiger Woods, '07 PGA Championship at Southern Hills

  • Thomas Bjorn, '05 PGA Championshp at Baltusrol

  • Vijay Singh, '03 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields

  • Mark O'Meara, '01 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club

On the other side of the spectrum, Ryo Ishikawa opened with 15-over par 85, which included six double bogeys and no birdies. Is it even worth him coming out tomorrow for round two? Either way, I think it's safe to say Ryo can go ahead and book his flight home to Japan...
