Fan Yells "Mashed Potatoes!"
By mustang6560 on 12/5/11
I've enjoyed the thrill of yelling "get in the hole" at a golf tournament before. Sure, it's annoying to hear on TV, but it's awesome when you're the one yelling it!
Of all the obnoxious things one could yell the moment after a tee shot, I never thought I'd hear "mashed potatoes". But, that's exactly what one fan yelled after Tiger Woods' tee shot on 18 yesterday at the Chevron World Challenge. Maybe the fan knew Tiger was about to out-drive Zach Johnson with an iron or maybe he is from Idaho, the land of potatoes, or maybe he won a bet with his buddy who dared him he didn't have the kahunas to yell "mashed potatoes" on national television.
Whatever the reason, I hope that fan didn't start a trend of fans yelling out random stuff from the tee box. "Get in the hole" is kind of cool, "mashed potatoes" is in no way cool.

get in the hole is not cool. He out drove Johnson who used Driver by what 15-20 yards.
The only way "Get in the Hole!" is possibly cool is when there is a legitimate chance the ball could go in. Yelling on the tee shot of a par 4/5 is just stupid. "Get in the fairway!"
on the contrary, i hope it started a trend to make golf more interesting! and also, tell those boring commentators to STOP stating the OBVIOUS! 'that's a bad golf shot'...and stop saying 'golf shot', we know it's a GOLF shot!!!
Torleif Sorenson says:
1000 points for HomerMania, especially for "possibly." It is a shame that golf fans everywhere cannot be more like the patrons at Augusta National or the Open Championship.
Whoever that shouting moron is, he deserves to be strung up by his toe-nails, have his mouth duct-taped shut, and then forced to listen to Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" on automatic repeat for six hours.
Really, you find it Thrilling to yell that?
"Kind Of Cool" Really!
Allow me to attempt a translation. It seems that in this little rejoinder, "potato" is being used as a metaphor for the golf ball, which the spectator has proclaimed to be "mashed"- that is, squarely and firmly struck by the player's golf club. So despite the uncouth bluster, all this fellow is trying to say is "Sir, that is a fine golf shot if I do say so myself."
Kurt the Knife says:
I like to yell, "Llama 'Jammies"!
Then they ask me to please leave the church service.
maybe it's an Aussie thing? someone yelled it at the President's Cup too.
ok, it's not an Aussie thing. you can find videos all over YouTube of someone yelling it.
and i like mashed potatoes....with lots of gravy.
I prefer, "Your the man, Tiger!" with the appropriate accent, of course.
