Luke Donald Wins Transitions Championship
By mustang6560 on 3/19/12
Luke Donald defeated Jim Furyk, Robert Garrigus and Sang-moon Bae in a sudden-death playoff Sunday to win the Transitions Championship. With the win, Luke returned to the top of golf, a position many thought he would never achieve again.
"I think people ... thought that my last year was maybe a little bit more of a -- not a fluke, but I don't think many people thought I could do that all over again this year," Donald said. "Hopefully, I can prove them wrong."I won't lie to you, I thought Rory McIlroy was going to be the number golfer in the world for the next few years. It wasn't meant to be a knock against Luke, I just figured Rory was finally coming into his own as the best golfer in the world. And I wasn't the only one. I ran a poll two weeks ago and nearly 70% of people thought Rory would stay at number one for at least six months. Only 30% thought his reign would last less than three months, which it did.
It appears as though the number one ranking will remain volatile for the foreseeable future. I'm sure the way the calculation works that Rory can bounce Luke with a win at the Masters or at a future tournament. I wonder who will be the number one golfer at the end of 2012?

I like it that the number one ranking is so volatile. A good rivalry is good for the fans. Now if we can just get them to banter a bit, a good back and forth, a friendly jab here and there and people will start taking sides, then we can get a Tiger/Phil situation except that the "Phil" side will actually have a chance to be number 1.
Something just feels wrong about Rory losing the #1 spot while sitting on the couch for a weekend. Certainly Luke Donald deserves the spot under the current system. Still, it would have been nice if Rory and Luke were in the same tournament when the position changed.
nothing to do with this article, but is anybody else having the error "no forums" when they try to go to the forums?
@birdieXris - yep, same problem for me, too.
@birdie I am not seeing forums as well.
Wow so much for holding the top spot for years to come, I wonder what was the shortest reign of #1 that might have been it. They should rank the strength of the field and calculate that somehow into the rankings, they field was not the deepest at the Transitions, no offense to Luke or any other players in the field.

Ummm... could you possibly include a number? What number golfer would he be?
Volatility makes for good headlines, but I would like to see the rankings calculated less often. This way if a golfer takes a few weeks off, they have a chance to keep their spot by placing well in their next tournament.
@birdieXris- The forums are back up! Sorry for the brief outage!
haha. it's cool. just can't put it in the bug forum if it's not there ;)
I honestly thought that Luke Donald's reign of terror would be over but I was wrong. I think he is set on keeping this thing as long as he can.
mjaber, good catch
Hey Banker, I don't have a degree in rocket science so I don't know how it is factored in, but in the rankings they do use a strength of field number to help determine how many world ranking points are given at each tournament
