![]() Joost Luiten impresses in the first round of the PGA Championship By mustang6560 on 8/9/12
Joost Luiten is a relatively unknown professional golfer from the Netherlands, however, he's been the talk of the first round of the PGA Championship.
The Dutchman jumped out to an early lead on the back nine (his front) at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island after three birdies and an eagle on holes 10, 11, 14, and 16 respectively. He continued his streak of hot play and even reached as low as 8-under-par thru 15 holes thanks to birdies on 2, 4, and 5. But, he wasn't able to sustain the momentum and bogeyed the last four holes to finish with a 4-under-par 68, which currently puts him in a four-way tie for fourth. We first learned about the Dutchman here on oobgolf at the 2011 Memorial Tournament. He was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard - a decision I didn't agree with. Since then, he's quietly played some pretty good golf across the pond - he even won his first European Tour event last November in the Iskandar Johor Open. He's currently #18 on the European Ryder Cup Points list, so if he is able to continue his strong showing at the PGA Championship, the youngster maybe able to play his way onto the European Ryder Cup team. Did anyone pick Joost for their Best Ball Majors Championship fantasy golf roster? PGA Championship Leaderboard Read an interesting golf article? Tip Your Editor Image via JoostLuiten.com [ comments ] You can tell majors are different. I saw him at -8 and knew that he would eventually drop back to Earth. I didn't think it would happen on the last 4 holes. He must have seen a leaderboard on the 15th tee and freaked out. I probably jinxed him by googling the ocean course record. 8/9/12
I can hear Chris Berman right now - "Joost "Juice Newton" Luiten"!!! And no, I didn't pick him and I feel pretty safe that it won't matter!!! 8/9/12
