 Reactions to Fred Couples Hall of Fame selection By mustang6560 on 9/21/12
As a member of the PGA Tour, Fred Couples notched 15 wins including one major ('92 Masters). As a member of the Champions Tour, he's won eight times (and counting) including two majors ('11 Senior Players and '12 British). In total, Freddie has amassed 55 professional victories since turning professional in 1980. And as a result of his successful career, he was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame Wednesday.
Following the announcement, opinions on Freddie's selection started pouring in and they're not very good. The majority of opinionist agree that Fred Couples is a good player. But, he's not a great player, and the Hall of Fame should be reserved for the great players. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out how in the world he's had 55 wins. Most of the 30 "other wins" were in exhibition matches. Means nothing. Nothing done on the Champions Tour means anything. Nothing done as Presidents Cup Captain means anything. It's ludicrous that he was selected. 9/21/12

Chi Chi Rodriguez has done as much or more to popularize golf, and he'll never get in. He's only won one less major than Fred (or you and me for that matter). Fuzzy Zoeller won two majors, sold a lot of tickets, and would have done more if not for injury, and he's not in. Ken Venturi won a US Open, had an injury shortened career, and was a distinguished broadcaster with CBS for over 30 years, and he's not in. Freddie, who likes to portray himself as "Mr. Aw Shucks," should plead embarrassment and turn this down. 9/21/12

Not saying Chi Chi should be in, but Couples' so called drawing power shouldn't be a consideration. Venturi should be in, at least in the broadcaster wing. But it really should be left to "on the field" accomplishments and nothing more. So yeah, Pete Rose should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. :-) 9/21/12

@PFL, you're right. I just didn't think anyone who'd never won a major championship would get in, but truth is there's a number of them in who never won a major. And that's just wrong. I remember someone (believe it was Bob Toski when he was a TV analyst in the early 70s) saying that the word "great" was overused and that no one should be considered great unless he won at least two major championships. That always stuck with me. 9/24/12

Pete not only holds the record for most hits, but he had that quality that made everyone around him better. He was on multiple World Championship teams. He single-handedly revived the Cincinnati franchise when it was dead in 1984 by returning as player-manager. He had a winning record as a manager, and the 1990 Reds that won wire to wire were largely Pete's team. Most importantly, and this is the distinction that everyone ignores, is that there is not one shred of evidence that Pete ever did anything to throw a game, unlike the 1919 Black Sox. I can understand why he wasn't reinstated, but he should be in the Hall of Fame. 9/25/12
