Longest Hole in U.S. Open History
By mustang6560 on 3/7/12
After reading an article about the Olympic Club, the site of the 2012 U.S. Open, I've decided not who I am rooting for but what I am rooting for - I want Bubba Watson (or anyone else really) to reach the green in two on the 670 yard par-5 16th hole.

The fact the USGA, according to Executive Director Mike Davis, is going to stretch the hole that far is just ridiculous. The 16th hole is a crescent shaped dog leg left that normally plays just over 600 yards. But for the U.S. Open, it will stretch 30 yards short of 700 yards, which will make it the longest hole in the history of the tournament.

I want the big hitters like Bubba to go after the hole because it would embarrass the USGA - "I see your raise and reraise you all in". Making the hole play 670 yards in my mind is an admission of the USGA that distance is their only weapon against the modern professional, which is not true. Look at last year. Rory destroyed Congressional and it played as the second longest course in U.S. Open history.

Rant over.

driver 270+
5I - 180-200
PW - 120+

fairly routine par 5...
it will be a "non event" hole.....

They botched it last year and they know it.

@guzzlingil that's 570-590 yards. Add another hundred to that pitching wedge.

DaRupp13 says:
But to guzz's point, laying up with 3 manageable clubs isn't anything crazy for the pros.

guzzlingil says:
@Rupp....yeah, I see that....but instead of a 5I they might hit a hybrid and 9I....still pretty manageable...,imo.

Weather got them last year. It happens. It's the greens and the rough that makes a US open tough. The length is just their way of keeping the guys honest and helping insure to bring the rough into play. Tour pros don't have much problem keeping their short irons in the short grass even if it's only ten yards wide (a lot of greens have landing areas that small and they hit them with regularity too). But you put a long iron or fairway metal in that pro's hands and demand that they hit that small target and they'll have a lot harder time of it.

@Guzz totally with you there. These guys hit it so far with short/mid irons, it's not like they have to go driver off the deck 3 times...

So Bubba will hit a 350 yard drive and a 320 yard 3w. seems reasonable in a round of golf for a pro but not on the same hole.

I would play it as a par 10 and try to birdie it. You gotta be kidding

I believe the second longest hole was a par 5 at the US Open at Oakmont, which Angel Cabrerra hit in 2. it's not unfathomable. Oakmont also had a par 3 that measured 300 yards and I think Cabrerra again hit only a 3 iron and got there.

badcaddy is right... at least they're not making the 16th a par-4...

Forget getting on the green in 2. I want to see someone hole out from the fairway after hitting driver off the deck.

jrbizzle says:
Unless they can tee up the second shot, it's not possible. DJ hits his RBZ 3 wood 300+, but that's teed up. Off the ground, he's probably giving up at least 20 yards.

mjaber says:
@jrbizzle... if they get rain and play "lift clean and place", it's possible. I remember seeing Phil use the mark his ball made as a tee to get some extra distance.

I understand they set up U.S. Open courses to test the skills of the players but I do like to see the pros score especially in the majors. I'm not too crazy about seeing even par or +1 win.

GBogey says:
I'm the opposite - any course that the pros play with 3-4 par 5's almost guarantees that they are well under par - makes par obsolete. Still 670 is ridiculous. For historical perspective one of the 5's at Baltusrol played 647. I think Daly made it in 2 and Tiger overshot the green in 2. I made it in 3 - from 525. Birdie putt lipped out.:(

Cinderella story, pulls out a, a 9-iron.
