Gil Hanse Wins Olympic Design Bid

The wait is over.

Gil Hanse won the bid to design the golf course that will host the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janiero.
We want to take this opportunity to say how honored and humbled we are to have been selected to design the golf course for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. On behalf of everyone involved with the Hanse Golf Course Design presentation, thank you to the City of Rio de Janeiro, the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, and the International Golf Federation for placing their trust in us to deliver a course that will become the first course to host golf in the Olympics since 1904.
Here's a sneak peak of his proposed design.

Hanse Golf Design

Hanse seems to design and build minimalist courses and I like that approach. Nothing wrong with moving a lot of dirt but I like the feeling that the golf gods were involved with the layout. Hanse also likes so called half holes. Short but difficult par threes, drivable par fours and reachable par fives. That approach provides great theater , especially on the final three holes of a match. You can tell a lot about a players thought processes when he has to choose between laying up or going for it in a clutch situation.

And those "clutch situations" will be even more dramatic with an Olympic gold medal on the line. Hanse is, indeed, a highly-regarded "traditionalist" architect whose course probably won't require a gargantuan amount of water and maintenance to keep playable after the Olympics are done. The design looks plenty attractive to me, especially holes 10, 15, and 16.

And for Rio-area residents, Hanse has very intelligently included in his proposal a three-hole practice course along with a full range and a short-game practice area - an area where contributor (and HOFer) Amy Alcott will probably have considerable influence.

I was hoping that either Hanse or Tom Doak (Renaissance Golf Design) would get the bid; I am absolutely convinced that Hanse will prove that the IOC retained the best architect and design team for this job.

I'm still curious how golf fits into the Olympics. What's the format? Are we looking at a rider cup style I'd is it all out play with a point system. Where can i find that info??

From the Rio 2016 website:
"The proposed Olympic competition for both men and women is a 72-hole individual stroke play tournament, and the player with the lowest score wins the gold medal. In case of a tie for either first, second or third place, a three-hole playoff will determine the medal winner."

Actually disappointed that it is a individual 72 hole tournament. I'd rather see 16 country single elimination bracket style. Even soccer or hockey style with group rounds and then elimination games, but ryder cup type matches. You can have multiple golfers for your country, but only 2 could play per round.

Personally, I think you need to see two members of a country working together to make it feel different from a normal event.

Agreed. I would like to see more of a team atmosphere. Individual stroke play seems like it would be somewhat anti-climactic.

I would rather see some variation on the NCAA tournament, where there is a team award and the overall individual/medalist score.

Torleif...I agree. Pure medal play takes some of the suprise factor out of it. Can you imagine a scenario where someone from a small country was able to scare a big international star. Kind of like the Jamaican bobsled team taking on Canada. Two member teams would be wonderful.

If any one would like to see his work go to his website/photos. Pay particular attention to L.A CC # 17- 146 yard par three that looks terrifying. Where the heck is the bailout area. I love it.

It'd be great if they only allowed amateur status golfers too. We already know the pros can play.
