Who founded the state of Ohio?
By mustang6560 on 7/26/12
The Web.com Tour, formerly the Nationwide Tour, is in Columbus, Ohio this week for the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational.

And to help familiarize TV viewers with the Columbus area, The Golf Channel enlisted the help from Web.com Tour player Luke List. In a promo for The Golf Channel, Luke provided the following information for the two people everyone watching at home.
"Hi, I'm Luke List from Jupiter, Florida. Did you know that Ohio was founded in 1812 by Christopher Columbus and became the state capital in 1816. And, oh by the way, Ohio State University is the largest university in the country."
Well, our friends at Deadspin did some fact checking and it appears Luke (or The Golf Channel) is lying mixed up their facts a little.
Ohio was founded in 1812

Ohio was founded in 1803.

by Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus died in 1506.

And became the state capital in 1816

The state capital of Ohio is Columbus, not Ohio. (Columbus wasn't founded by Christopher Columbus, either.) Columbus was named state capital in 1812, but wasn't officially a city until 1816.

Ohio State is the largest university in the country

It was, once, but hasn't been for quite a long time. Arizona State is the largest university (by enrollment) in the country.
If I had to guess, I'd say The Golf Channel is to blame on this one. It's hard to believe Luke would be responsible to look up his own information about Ohio. Either way, it's definitely embarrassing for both parties involved.

Hope this promo is a lame attempt at a joke and not for real otherwise GC should stick to golf not history.

As a History/Geography drop out in college, it never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people are about this country. Take Michigan, for example. The capital of Michigan is "M". Our state capitol is located in Lansing, which is named after Sherry Lansing, former CEO of Paramount Pictures. We sold the naming rights to Paramount a couple of decades ago during an economic downturn. ;)

Luke just needed a little editing:

"Hi, I'm Luke List from Jupiter, Florida. Did you know that Ohio was founded? Ohio State University is in Ohio."

There. As long as he got his name and home town right, I think we have a winner.

Maybe he got his information from Web.com.

OK, I posted this about Bubba when he made comments in France and I'll pass this along to Luke List. Please, just play golf. I'd rather watch you play than have to listen or read about what you have to say. Sorry.

Maybe all the dope smoking on the web.com tour isn’t limited to the players

SRogers13: 1000 points - good one.

To the promotions staff with the Hogan/Nike/Buy.com/Nationwide/Internet tour: Obviously, your spot wasn't funny enough. I'm just a lowly, humble technical writer and research editor, but even *I* could have done better than THAT!

Next time, display a graphic informing all seventeen of your viewers that Luke List grew up in Tennessee and graduated from Vanderbilt University. Perhaps even have him wear a University of South Dakota golf shirt, for good measure.

I'd better get over to the Ohio Wikipedia entry and make the edits.

Another peeve I have against GC is that they spend way too much time talking about things unrelated to golf, like football, baseball, basketball. Those sports have their own channels, does the football channel talk about golf? Doubt it! If I wanted to know about those other sports, I'd turn to channels that offer those sports. Gee how are the Packers doing, think I'll turn on GC to find out.............

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA That is precious! He'll grow up to be a brilliant car salesman
