New Fazio at PGA National

PGA National Resort & Spa, the host site of the PGA Tour's Honda Classic, is now back to five courses.  Tom Fazio II, the third generation of golf architects in the Fazio family, oversaw a complete redesign and rebuild of the resort's original course, now known as "The Fazio." It debuted on November 1 on the site of the former Haig Course, which was named in memory of legendary golfer Walter Hagen, who won the PGA Championship five times.  The original course was designed by the uncle-and-nephew team of George and Tom Fazio (the elder) when it opened in 1980.

The technical improvements include an upgraded irrigation system with soil-moisture sensors, while the greens (including the picturesque 7th, above) have been re-seeded with TifEagle Bermuda.  The tee-boxes and fairways, meanwhile, have been re-seeded with Celebration Bermuda - a strain developed to be more resistant to traffic damage, drought, and even turf diseases.  Celebration Bermuda is so highly regarded that the University of Florida had this strain deployed on the football field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium earlier this year.

Fazio also designed new tee-boxes to go along with the "Tee It Forward" campaign; the front tees now play to about 5,100 yards.  For the "1% crowd" who insist on playing from the tips, the course now stretches to just over 7,000 yards.

The luxury resort already attracts golfers in part with their four other courses, as well as Dave Pelz and David Leadbetter teaching academies, high-end dining and lodging, and a 40,000 square-foot spa.  Now, the resort also offers club-shipping, minimizing travel headaches and worries about clubs lost among airport luggage.
