The Blue Monster Re-Opens

The Blue Monster has re-opened.

Part of the re-branded Trump National Doral resort, this famous course re-opened last Saturday with a complete redesign by "retro-traditionalist" architect Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Among those fortunate few to have played the course is Bill Van Smith, who wrote about it for the Miami Herald. In his review, Van Smith quoted The Donald himself, who (predictably) offered the usual promotional praise. What is interesting is the review by WGC-Cadillac Championship executive director Eddie Carbone, who played the Blue Monster back in the 1990s. He compared the old and the new:
"I really liked it back then. Now I really, really, really like it. Actually, I was blown away."
Carbone also said that the humongous earth-moving was not only designed to affect golfers, but also to benefit spectators of the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Van Smith notes that one mound allows spectators to watch play on the 14th green, the 15th fairway, and at the tee at 16.

Among Hanse and Wagner's demands for golfers is the par-4 16th, which plays to 325 yards from the tips. The carry over the water at 16 is... 285 yards.

(Try driving THAT green!)

As with most of the highly-regarded, high-end resort courses in the United States, getting on the Blue Monster is expensive. $450, to be exact. Still, considering that Gil Hanse is the chief architect and that the course hosts an annual PGA Tour / WGC event, the Blue Monster may still be one of those "bucket list" courses — even if the trip will cost you a few house payments.

The Donald released a statement declaring that this is the greatest golf course in the world. Oh! By the way. He has made the same statement on every other golf course he owns. Come on Goober. Pick one. Maybe you will pick one that qualifies. Then again, have you ever played Augusta National or did you just forget that old track.

@JJ - I've said it before and I'll say it again... as big a blowhard as Trump is, all of his courses are pretty impressive. I like that you called him a Goober, though. With a capital G, no less.
joe jones says:
Impressive yes. But they can't all be the greatest. And it takes huge ego to dismiss all of the other great courses of the world.

Well if huge ego is required for that job I sure wouldn't fire Trump.

One thing that does suprise me. I understand that they moved 250,000 to 300,000 tons of earth to accomplish the re design. Gil Hanse is supposed to be a minimalist designer.I guess that went out the window as long as the Donald was paying the freight.
Duke of Hazards says:
Yeah, I've heard him say '[this and that] are the greatest' and 'Trump Los Angeles is better than Pebble Beach!' and a ton of other horse crap. I've just tuned it now as Donald being Donald. I'm no Trump biographer, but I'm sure that the constant aggrandizement of everything is part of his formula for success. He's still a huge Goober, though.

I played the blue monster in 2007. It was on my bucket list. I paid $420 and got a caddy. Very expensive 1 day vacation. It was awesome though.
